All eight illusions are absorbed into the state of Dharmata, unborn. If you meet the self-aware, meaningful lama, appearances will arise as companions. For example: Whatever army of plants and forests arises on top of a great blazing fire, all become companions of the fire. Likewise, for a yogi who has realized the unborn nature of reality, whatever white and red appearances arise, all become companions of the unborn. Secondly, what kind of student is needed for such a teacher? Machig says: Great faith, diligence, and wisdom; great heart, perseverance, and endurance; small pride, stinginess, deceit, jealousy, desire, and attachment; respect for the lama, fear of death. That is a precious golden vessel. It is best to have eight qualities and be free from six faults. Machig also says: If a person comes who is suffering, afflicted by disease and demons, near death, or a leper, abandoned by diviners or doctors, diviners, witches, those with clairvoyance, those who speculate and determine the time of death, know that they are also vessels for this Dharma. This is a special, intermediate vessel for this Dharma. Again, she herself says: Or, an ordinary person with faith, who fears death and has devotion, who listens to whatever is said, know that they are vessels for hearing this Dharma. This is the last. In short, one needs to have three great qualities. Machig says: Great realization, great generosity of body and life, great courage of Chöd. This instruction should be taught to those who possess these qualities. So it is said. This can also be slightly differentiated: Deciding that the various appearances, the appearances of objects, are made by the mind, and that the elaborations of the object-possessing mind are pacified in the space of the unborn mother of mind itself, all the illusions of the mind's eight consciousness aggregates are absorbed into the state of Dharmata, unborn.

Secondly, what kind of disciple is needed for such a master? Machig said: Great faith, diligence, and wisdom, Great heart, perseverance, and endurance of suffering, Little pride, stinginess, deceit, and, Jealousy, desire, and attachment, Respect for the lama and fear of death, That is a precious golden vessel. Having eight qualities and free from six faults is excellent. Again, Machig said: If a person comes with suffering, Afflicted by disease and demons, Facing death and a leper, Abandoned by the diviner or doctor, Fortune teller, Witch with clairvoyance, Making predictions and setting a death date, That is also known as a vessel for this Dharma. This is the special intermediate vessel for this Dharma. Again, she herself said: Or an ordinary person with faith, Fearing death and with devotion, Obeying what is said, Know that as a vessel for listening to this Dharma. This is said to be the lowest. In short, one needs to have three great qualities, Machig said: Great burst of realization, Great generosity of body and life, Great determination of Chö. This instruction should be taught to those who possess these qualities. Secondly, there are two aspects: relying on the lama through thought and action, and how to listen to the Dharma. First, if all the above qualities are present, it is excellent; half is intermediate; the lowest is that under the influence of the times, one does not break vows, and there must be someone who practices the instructions of Chö, so one should first contemplate. Furthermore, even if one does not rely on a lama and has great wisdom, one cannot attain enlightenment through self-creation and imitation, so one must rely on a lama. Again, Machig said: It is precious to rely on a noble spiritual friend, It is precious to have the instructions in one's heart, Until understanding is gained, Do not hastily conclude with mere pleasant words. And, when entering the path, first, rely on the lama and listen to the instructions; in the middle, be skilled in keeping vows and pray without interruption; finally, please the lama through practice. To summarize the two ways of relying on thought and action: In the chapter it says: The order of entering the path is: First, please the lama, And obtain the empowerment instructions. In the middle, keep the vows, And pray constantly without separation. Finally, renounce the world, And always practice.
