The demon that is grasped. In the very nature of the mind that grasps at duality, since the fundamental essence is not established, if it is left to rest on its own, like being separated from its root, forms and so on are subdued, and again transformed into wisdom itself. Form not binding, liberation is in accordance with the teachings. The sense faculty of the ear and so on, should be examined as explained above. What is shown as the demon with obstacles, is to be known as an external demon. When objects do not appear as objects, but are constantly held in the mind, and when the mind is engaged without an object, and when one is deluded without instructions, and when the meaning is not understood in this way, this is to show the distinctions of demons. In the Sutra Showing the Three Appearances, four distinctions are mentioned. What are they? The demon with obstacles and the demon without obstacles, the demon of attachment and aversion and the demon of pride. The characteristics of these are: When the five senses and the appearance of objects arise, true grasping, attachment, aversion, pleasure and pain arise. The demon with obstacles is the one who engages in negation and affirmation. The mind judges good and bad in relation to objects and phenomena. Taking and rejecting with hope and doubt is called the demon of unobstructed conceptualization. The ability to pacify diseases and evil spirits, warmth, signs, etc., attachment, arrogance, and pride in the qualities that rely on the path, are the demons of attachment and aversion. On the true nature and the instructions, one cannot abandon them with the mind and engages in analysis. Hesitation is called the demon of pride. Knowing everything as one's own appearance, the nature of reality, cutting off attachment, without negating or affirming, in self-liberation, the demon itself is liberated, without doubt. Thus, the name, meaning, distinctions, and all the methods of cutting are shown at once. Secondly, according to Machig (a female accomplished one). Showing the distinctions of demons: The demon with obstacles and the demon without obstacles, the demon of attachment and aversion and the demon of pride, arise from oneself and harm oneself, like the saliva of a rakshasa. The eye sense clings to form, with the nature of being beautiful and ugly, the demon that grasps at attachment and aversion. When objects do not appear as objects, but are constantly held in the mind, and without an object

To have thoughts in mind, to be dull without instruction, to see oneself as superior in one's heart, to harbor jealousy in one's heart, to think of gods and demons in one's heart, and so on. Although no actual obstacles appear, they cause harm to the mind, like unobstructed demons. Emaho! The essence of my instruction is this: Whatever movement arises or appears, do not cling to it too much, and you will subdue the unobstructed demons. The realm of mind that arises is the demon, it is the choice of taking and rejecting. Do not grasp at what is to be taken, son of lineage! Do not block the feelings that arise, son of lineage! Do not fabricate body and mind, son of lineage! Do not enter into concepts, son of lineage! If you practice in this way, you will subdue the demons. If you do not grasp with non-attachment what you like and enjoy, the other shore will be meaningless, and you will fall under the power of demons. Thus, self-importance is the demon, but if your mind is peaceful, the demon is also peaceful. If your mind abides, the demon also abides. If your own nature is not established, the demon will not be established either. By the nature of rootless phenomena, if you suppress your own clinging, all the demons will be suppressed, and you will transcend samsara and nirvana. The arising and ceasing of joy and sorrow are all pacified in their own place. Thus, do you understand, son of lineage? Self-importance, self-importance, so-called self-importance, all inside and outside is self-importance. Gods and demons, and so on, are also your own self-importance. If you can cut the bonds of the mind, it is unsurpassed enlightenment. It is not the annihilation of thoughts, but rather saying that everything is mind only. If you can realize this, self-importance cannot be bound by Dharma. If the son of lineage can understand this, he will subdue the demons, abide in a state of fearlessness, abide in a state of non-contention. Thus, the extensive treatises of Agyadeva, the extensive treatises of the saints, the Compendium of Teachings, the sections, and many other scriptures, all speak of the many classifications of demons as non-dual enemies and friends, but none are not included in this root. To see oneself as superior in one's heart, to harbor jealousy in one's heart, to think of gods and demons in one's heart, and so on. Although no actual obstacles appear, they cause harm to the mind, like unobstructed demons. Emaho!
