It was taught: One should cut the hair of discursive thoughts with the razor of wisdom. One should protect oneself from the heat of afflictions with the Dharma robe of emptiness. One should wash away the stain of ignorance with the water of wisdom. One should eliminate the hunger of desire with the food of meditation. Thus it was said. In short, compared to accomplishing mundane virtues such as the five perfections of generosity, discipline, patience, diligence, and meditation for a thousand eons, meditating for just the moment of opening the eyes and smiling in meditative absorption is much more beneficial. Thus it is said in many places. The Twenty Thousand Verse Prajnaparamita Sutra says: Compared to giving to as many sentient beings as there are in the great trichiliocosm, and establishing them in discipline, meditative absorption, wisdom, seeing the wisdom of liberation, entering the stream, and attaining self-awakening, cultivating this Perfection of Wisdom for just a snap of the fingers increases merit greatly. Thus it is said. The Sutra on the Definitive Exposition of Reality says: Shariputra, compared to listening for an eon, if one remains in meditative equipoise for just a snap of the fingers, merit increases even more. Thus it is said. The Jataka Sutra says: The Bhagavan addressed the monks: Monks, where is enlightenment in touching the head? Where is enlightenment in yellow silk? Where is enlightenment in washing with water? Where is enlightenment in fasting? Thus it was said. The monks became doubtful and asked: How then is enlightenment attained? It was taught: One should cut the hair of discursive thoughts with the razor of wisdom. One should protect oneself from the heat of afflictions with the Dharma robe of emptiness. One should wash away the stain of ignorance with the water of wisdom. One should eliminate the hunger of desire with the food of meditation. Thus it was said. In short, compared to accomplishing mundane virtues such as the five perfections of generosity, discipline, patience, diligence, and meditation for a thousand eons, meditating for just the moment of opening the eyes and smiling in meditative absorption is much more beneficial. Thus it is said. Third, explaining the unique distinctions of the Great Seal Cutting practice that are not shared with other systems. Machig Labdrön said: Listen, my sons! This Dharma of mine, called the Great Seal Cutting, is distinct from other Dharmas in that:
