Appearing in a clear lake, It is not the moon reflected in the water. Know all dharmas to be of such nature. Just as people dwell in the midst of forests and mountains, from singing, speaking, laughter, and weeping, though they hear the echo of rocks, they are unaware. Thus, know all dharmas to be the same. Singing, music, and weeping as well, though echoes arise from them, there is never melody in the sound. Thus, know all dharmas to be the same. Just as in a dream one indulges in desires, but upon awakening, one sees nothing. Children are extremely attached and cling to desires. Thus, know all dharmas to be the same. Soundless things manifest forms, transforming into horses, elephants, and various chariots, but there is no appearance in them. Thus, know all dharmas to be the same. Just as in a young woman's dream, she sees a baby boy born and die, rejoicing at his birth and displeased at his death. Thus, know all dharmas to be the same. Just as the moon in the water at night appears in clear and unpolluted water, realizing the moon in the water is empty and cannot be grasped. Thus, know all dharmas to be the same. Just as at midday in the summer, a person tormented by thirst, sees a mirage like a heap of water. Thus, know all dharmas to be the same. There is no water in a mirage, yet foolish beings desire to drink it, but unreal water cannot be drunk. Thus, know all dharmas to be the same. Just as one seeks the heartwood from a wet tree trunk, even if one splits it open, there is no heartwood inside or out. Thus, know all dharmas to be the same. As it is said, practice in this way, and while engaging in virtuous activities, such as dharma practice, do not be separated from mindfulness. Just as...

The moon in clear water appears in the clear and unblemished water. Realize that the moon in the water is empty and cannot be grasped. Know all dharmas in the same way. Just as in the midday sun of summer, a thirsty traveler sees a mirage and thinks it is water. Know all dharmas in the same way. There is no water in a mirage, yet ignorant beings want to drink it. The false water cannot be drunk. Know all dharmas in the same way. Just as with the trunk of a wet tree, even if someone splits it open to find the heartwood, there is no heartwood inside or out. Know all dharmas in the same way. As it is said, practice accordingly, and while engaging in Dharma practice and other virtuous deeds, do not be separated from mindfulness. Third, blending into union: At the time of blending subsequent attainment into union, whatever thoughts arise, know them as the union of appearance and emptiness, bliss and emptiness inseparable, clarity and emptiness without grasping, and the non-duality of thought and emptiness. Because this is the essence of reality, all Buddhas of the past, present, and future attained Buddhahood through realizing it in this way. Because one does not recognize it, one is obscured by negative imprints on the base consciousness, and the alaya-consciousness of the base consciousness accumulates karma, thus wandering in samsara. This is because the guru has not pointed it out, and one has not practiced oneself. As it says in the "Explanation of Profound Meaning": It is there from the beginning, but one does not recognize it; although together, one has not seen the face; although constantly together, one has not recognized it. For example, one's own eyes and face are close and have been together for a long time, but one does not see them until looking in a mirror. The guru's pointing out is like a mirror, and one's own practice is like the eyes. If these two are not present, one cannot see the Dharma, which is like the face. Therefore, it is said that these two must be present. For those who cannot comprehend that much, guide them with methods that emphasize calm abiding. With the body in the seven-point posture, focus the mind on a white "Ah" (Tibetan: ཨ, Devanagari: अ, Romanized Sanskrit: a, Literal meaning: Ah) at the tip of the nose, the size of a mustard seed, and meditate on it briefly and repeatedly. Sometimes, that "Ah" goes out about twelve fingers with the breath, and when inhaling, it returns to the tip of the nose. Repeatedly contemplate this, and the mind
