Ba. The meaning of the great self-luminous clarity. Separated from all mental activity. Thoughts are naturally enlightened. Meditate on the recollection of the Buddha. Thus, understanding that all thoughts of the three times are selfless, with wisdom separating from the attachment of ignorance, and darkness cleared away. Separated from the three extremes of arising, ceasing, and abiding. The Dharma nature of self-increasing, separated from the base, cure, and defilement. The meaning of the original Buddha is to recollect ordinary consciousness with wisdom arising from meditation. Magig says: What is the conduct of the Buddha? All actions of clinging are extinguished. Unborn nature is inherently increasing. That is called the Buddha. Thus, and so on, it is said. Here, some people of small intelligence say not to make effort, and I think this is the view of Heshang. If it is thought that all who say not to make effort are Heshang, then many sutras and tantras say not to make effort. If you do not know the difference between them, then the words are like a rabbit chasing, without meaning. To know the difference, you must first know the view of Heshang, as follows: Heshang is, looking at the nature of the mind, all the coarse and fine thoughts are gone to the place of peace, that is called non-conceptualization. That continuous peace is the ultimate of meditation. The name is White One. He has mastered many sutras, so it is said that without memory and without effort is the recollection of the Buddha. The Dharma and the Sangha are also said in this way, and they all cling to the literal meaning. They cling to the thick peace, and any thoughts that arise are regarded as obscurations. They do not have the self-liberation of Mahamudra, Dzogchen, and Shije, and the wisdom light of each. Here, the non-effort that is said is for those who have excellent faculties and do not need to rely on peace. The nature of the mind is inherently emptiness, so there is no need to establish emptiness. Mitra Jogi said: If the thoughts are not emptiness, then you must meditate on non-conceptualization. But if the thoughts are inherently emptiness, then you do not need to deliberately meditate on non-conceptualization. What is the point of abandoning the near and seeking the far? Thus, treat the thoughts that arise without modification, and abide in them. The Eight Thousand Verses says: Shariputra, the great Bodhisattva does not cling to all dharmas as real.

Not grasping, not paying attention, one will not fall into the three realms, nor will one fall into the Hearer's ground or the Solitary Buddha's ground. Also, as it is said in the "Compendium": The Bodhisattva does not grasp the past, future, or present, and the three times are pure. Whatever is unconditioned and without elaboration is the supreme practice of Prajnaparamita. Also, as it is said in Kamalashila's "Stages of Meditation": Consciousness does not abide in anything, does not think, does not pay attention, and abandons everything. And so on, although there are many, these alone are enough to understand. The "non-attention" mentioned here is spoken to those whose faculties are extremely pacified and do not need to rely on abiding. Because the nature of the mind is originally emptiness, there is no need to prove emptiness. As Je Mitra Joki said: If conceptual thought is not emptiness, then one needs to meditate on non-conceptual thought. But if conceptual thought is originally emptiness, then there is no need to deliberately meditate on non-conceptual thought. What is the use of putting aside what is near and going around what is far? Therefore, for any conceptual thought that arises, abide without modification, as it is said in the "Eight Thousand Verses": Shariputra, a great Bodhisattva who does not grasp all dharmas as real, does not grasp signs, and does not pay attention, will not fall into the three realms, nor will one fall into the Hearer's ground or the Solitary Buddha's ground. Thus, when abiding in the nature of the mind, which is naturally pure and free from the extremes of elaboration, there is no object to be meditated upon, no self that can meditate, and no fruit that has been meditated upon. In the original, natural state, all the dharmas of samsara and nirvana are like the center of the sky, equally abiding in the vast emptiness of the unborn mind. Machig said: This view of original purity, free from extremes, is not the opponent of a hundred true dharmas. Looking, one does not see the other shore.
