Now, because there is no instruction and practice of Chö, one cannot go to the mountains for Chö. Therefore, beginners need pride when doing Chö. When miracles occur, there must be a strong backing of emptiness. There must be a generous mind, and confidence in practice. That alone is pride, but it is not a demon. The demon of joy and sorrow is when doing Chö, no matter what happens, such as illness, happiness and suffering, high and low, adverse conditions, and obstacles, one should look at it with joy. Why? Because relying on these conditions, these adverse conditions can complete the accumulations, purify obscurations, exhaust bad karma, increase virtuous deeds, eliminate obstacles on the path, and become an aid to practitioners. The previous accomplished ones also attained perfect enlightenment by relying on transforming adverse conditions into the path. Therefore, I should also maintain equanimity towards happiness and suffering, thinking that by transforming happiness and suffering into the path, I can attain perfect enlightenment. This is the demon of joy and sorrow. Then, as long as realization has not arisen and the clinging to appearances has not been reversed, there is no loss even if joy and pride are not abandoned, and there is no need to abandon them. After realization arises and the clinging to appearances is reversed, even if they are not abandoned, they will naturally disappear. For example, winter ice freezes even when it melts, and spring melts and disappears even when it does not melt. Chö has three aspects to abandon disputes: the definition of Chö, the state, and now the disputes on Chö. The first is the essence of Chö, which is to possess the antidote that can destroy all internal and external faults. The divisions are: dividing according to the object to be cut, there is cutting external demons and spirits, cutting internal demons of the mind, and cutting secret demons of adverse conditions. Dividing according to the antidote that cuts, there is cutting with conventional means, and cutting with ultimate wisdom. The state of Chö is: the object to be abandoned and the antidote are without self-nature. This is nominally referred to as Chö. The definition is to possess the wisdom that realizes that the object to be cut and the cutter are without self-nature. This object of the demon's Chö is the antidote that destroys all adverse conditions, because with the wisdom that realizes that the object to be cut and the cutter are without self-nature, one can know that all phenomena are emptiness. For example, just as a diamond can destroy other objects. Chö

Regarding refuting the debate: When practicing Chö, is there an antidote to sever the object to be severed? If there is, then the four maras, which are the subject, cannot be severed even if severed, because there is an antidote to sever them. If you accept this, then the vow of Chö is broken, because it cannot be severed. If you say the reason is not established, then the reason is established, because the antidote is solely the arrogant mara. If the antidote is not the arrogant mara, then where is the mind mara placed? If there is no antidote, then the four maras, which are the subject, cannot be severed even if severed, because there is no antidote to sever them. For example, just as the great Shakyamuni (Buddha) cannot be obstructed by the obstacles of the maras. Here, because there is an antidote, there is no fault of not being able to sever. The antidote is not the object to be severed during the path, because during the path, it is necessary to rely on the antidote. Then, is it valid to say that arrogance is not a mara? Answer: It is accepted that it is not a mara during the path, but the assertion that it is not a mara during the fruition is not established. Before engaging in Chö, do you take refuge and then say, "Please protect me, please save me"? If you say that, then the four maras, which are the subject, cannot be severed even if severed, because the Chö practitioner cannot offer the body as food again. The sign is established by admission, just like seeking a messenger with sweet words. If you don't say that, then it contradicts the words of Ama (Machig Labdrön). The "Collection of Teachings" says, "Even if I live in a dilapidated house, an empty room, a cemetery, or a place without shelter, please protect me." Here, there is no contradiction in taking refuge, because you don't say, "Please protect me, please save me," but rather, "In order to abandon attachment to the body, to treat happiness and suffering equally, to transform obstacles into the path, and to perfect Chö, please bless me." Then, isn't it contradictory that the "Collection of Teachings" says, "Please protect me," etc.? Answer: It is not contradictory, because it refers to severing from the final intention. Before practicing the Chö teachings, in order to enable all sentient beings to attain complete perfect enlightenment, do you generate the mind of thinking, "Therefore, I will practice the Chö teachings"? If you do, then the Chö practitioner, which is the subject, cannot sever the mara of attachment and aversion even if practiced, because if you focus on the fruition of complete perfect enlightenment, that is attachment and aversion.
