Now, relying on the practice of the Chöd instructions, external demons cannot invade, illnesses and suffering are pacified, abilities and blessings arise, diseases and leprosy are cured, mental imbalances and excessive heart wind are calmed, confusion and merit arise, good reputation and fame arise, and vast inner and outer qualities arise, causing joy. Now, with hope of attainment, and with desire, with joy, with elation, one practices Chöd with the aim of benefiting from the results. The demon of pride is that even if one goes to dangerous places such as cemeteries, empty lands, and nomadic monasteries, no obstacles or harm will occur to me. Why is that? Because I am watched by the eyes of gods and lamas, protected by the compassion of the Three Jewels, and guarded by heroes and dakinis. One cherishes such thoughts, and with confidence in the profound essence of the Chöd instructions, inwardly cherishing the practice of understanding the meaning of no gods and no demons, no matter what illusions of gods and demons may arise, giving the body is sufficient. If one can give, the demon can come and take, but cannot eat, and will return and leave on its own. With the thought that doing so is sufficient, one practices Chöd. The way to cut off the four demons is that the two, with obstacles and without obstacles, are the demons of the causal time, so they are cut off at the causal time. Pride is the demon of the path time, so it is cut off from the arising of the progress of practice. Joy and elation are the demons of the fruition time, so they are cut off from the arising of the fruit. The first two demons appear at the path time, and the latter two appear at the time of attaining the fruit. The latter two are, considering the fruit as a demon is because of pride at the path time, and because one cannot abandon body and life, because one has not relinquished self-grasping, the progress of qualities will not arise. If joy and elation arise towards the fruit of Chöd, qualities will cease, so one practices without joy and elation. Therefore, even the Buddha attained it without desire and hope. Therefore, if the two faults of joy, elation, and pride arise, they become friends due to attachment to things, and are therefore to be abandoned. The method of taking the four demons into the path is that the word "demon" arises from the sound of "Māraṇa,"

Until realization, it is a demon; if realized, it accumulates merits. The time of practice is the worldly path of ordinary beings who have not attained the ground and are in the stages of accumulation and preparation. Therefore, at that time, the body has power, but the mind does not have freedom. Therefore, illnesses and sufferings come involuntarily. Because one has not attained miraculous powers and clairvoyance, one is obstructed by the four elements. At that time, it is difficult to cut off the demons with obstacles, so one must cut off the demons without obstacles. These are the subtle and coarse experiences of the mental realm, such as gods, demons, illnesses, sufferings, attachment, hatred, and the eight worldly concerns. If a person who has not attained the ground has antidotes, they can be cut off during the stages of accumulation and preparation. From the path of seeing onwards, one attains the ground, so it is a path beyond the world. Therefore, one can cut off the demons with obstacles, the four elements, poisons, weapons, and so on. However, one has not yet reached the Buddha's ground, so one must train on the path. Even if one practices austerities on the path, one will not experience illnesses and sufferings, so it only appears to be austerity; there is no fatigue or hardship. For example, always giving away one's body, or like Nāropā jumping into fire and cliffs, it will not become an obstacle. As it is said, 'Having attained the ground, one is free from the five fears.' Therefore, at that time, the demons with obstacles are cut off. Until realization arises, pride will come, so one must cut off the demons that cause pride. After realization arises, joy and attachment to merits will arise, so one must cut off the demons of joy and attachment. If one knows how to carry it on the path, it is shown that it is not a demon. This is because one cuts off the demons without obstacles that are difficult to cut off, thereby opening the door to cutting off and merits. Internally, happiness and suffering become equal; externally, samsara and nirvana become equal. Because it is the guide of merits, it is not a demon. For the demons with obstacles that appear as objects, one obtains the warmth of practice. With the strength of practice and the confidence of realization, one can use the four elements such as fire and water. This is merely the guide for the manifestation of miraculous powers. Because it helps to accomplish the benefit of others, it is not a demon. The demon of pride arises because one has obtained the confidence of practice internally, and the warmth of virtuous deeds has arisen. This is the ability to generate practice; the mind is fire.
