It is very important to recognize that clinging to self-ignorance is the root. Ignorance cannot be eliminated from the beginning, but by constantly practicing non-self, the root of clinging to self will gradually weaken, and the wisdom of non-self will gradually increase, thus progressing from the path of accumulation to the path of preparation, etc., and gradually entering the stages of the path. Subduing the demons to be subdued and generating merits are simultaneous. If the demons to be subdued are not subdued, one cannot enter the path. The demons of the path to be subdued must be definitely cut off from the beginning of entering the Dharma to the path of seeing. Even on the path of seeing, although there is no root of afflictions of true clinging, one still needs to practice until one attains Buddhahood. There are also two kinds of clinging, namely, what is clung to and the clinger. Among them, what is clung to is ignorance, which is the root of true clinging and should be abandoned; while the clinger, which is the self-aware wisdom that recognizes ignorance, is the abandoner, so it does not need to be abandoned, and even if it is abandoned, there will be no loss. The nature of the clinger is self-aware wisdom, from which arises a special experience of realizing non-self. When special experiences arise, if the merits such as joy and excitement mentioned earlier arise, this will hinder the attainment of Buddhahood, so it is called the fruit demon. If one takes dreams and illusions as the path, as mentioned earlier, one can exert the effect of all merits, thereby benefiting sentient beings. Therefore, there is no need to abandon the arising of such joy and excitement, and it is impossible to abandon them. For example, just as when warmth and moisture meet, it is impossible to prevent the growth of crops, there is no need to prevent the arising of perfect merits. Whatever merits arise, they should be taken as the path like an echo. Among them, both obstructive and non-obstructive are to be abandoned, and both the clinger and joy and excitement are the abandoners. At the time of the complete fruition, one must be liberated from both what is to be abandoned and the abandoner. Son of the lineage. Thus it was said. Again, Gangpa asked: Machig Labdrön, the characteristics of the demon you mentioned are like this, so, do gods and demons refer to those demons? Or are there other gods and demons? Machig replied: Son, listen.

That is to say, what are called gods and demons are also demons, but not only that, there are indeed other existences called gods and demons. That is, worldly conventional gods and demons, essential abiding state gods and demons, apparent fabricated gods and demons, self-nature innate gods and demons, infallible karmic gods and demons, and ultimate meaning gods and demons, these six kinds. Each of these is also divided into two kinds, gods and demons. Ultimately, gods and demons are non-dual. But for the previous ones, gods are also demons, and demons are also gods, there is no certainty. Among them, the first, the so-called worldly conventional gods and demons, is universally known to all people in the world. The so-called imputed god refers to the phenomenon in the worldly realm of appearance that is beautiful in form, pleasing, and can make people feel happy and loving, which is called a god. And those who in people's minds, are ugly in form, disgusting, cause fear, and even threaten life, are called demons. That is to say, whoever is helpful is called a god, and whoever is harmful is called a demon. Worldly people only rely on good and bad, benefit and harm to falsely establish the names of gods and demons, which is only the conjecture of ignorant people, and does not conform to the facts. Because good people can also bring harm, and bad people can also bring help.\ There are many cases where help is given at first, but harm is brought later. There are also cases where harm is done at first, but help is given later. Therefore, there is no certainty. Treating a liked thing as a god can also bring harm. Treating a disliked thing as a demon can also bring help. Therefore, there is no certainty as to what gods and demons refer to. Merely clinging to the idea that there are two kinds of gods and demons based on good and bad, benefit and harm is only a fabrication of worldly people, and does not conform to the facts. Therefore, those who practice Chöd do not at all agree with clinging to the idea that they are gods and demons based solely on good and bad, benefit and harm. For good and bad, benefit and harm, neither falsely establish the name of gods and demons, nor proclaim their reputation, but understand them as unreal, and know how to transform them into the path. The second, the essential abiding state gods and demons are divided into two kinds, the gods of
