This is the water that washes away the delusions of the eight worldly concerns. Knowing that things arising from causes will perish is the wind that encourages diligence and joy in virtue. Realizing that this life is like dew on the tip of a blade of grass is the ground that nurtures the tree of faith. Remembering death in one's mind is the axe that cuts off the root of evil. The thought of knowing this life to be impermanent is the boat that ferries one across the ocean of existence. The arising of the thought of death in one's mind is the ladder to climb to the palace of liberation. Accompanying the understanding of impermanence is the wish-fulfilling jewel that accomplishes what is needed and desired and fulfills hopes. It is crucial to cultivate the mind of death with the understanding of virtue in order to accomplish the stainless path of liberation. If one does not understand the impermanence of compounded things, one will not be weary of the activities of this life. This is the root of evil, and therefore it brings about five faults: If one is not weary of the activities of this life, one will not find the opportunity to practice Dharma, this is one. If one is not weary of this life, one will not be able to focus on the work of practice, this is two. If one is not weary of this life, one will not sever ties with worldly affairs, this is three. If one is not weary of the activities of this life, virtuous deeds will remain mere verbal wishes, this is four. If one is not weary of the activities of this life, one will not be able to escape from the slavery of desire, this is five. Unsteady steps, the body sways and changes shape, accompanied by fearful gasps and the creaking of joints and bones. The complexion fades, the face is haggard, and the eyes are tearful. Muscles waste away, skin dries up, and the network of veins becomes visible. The eyes and ears are not clear, and the teeth fall out. One babbles from the mouth and likes to talk. Forgetfulness, memory fades, and consciousness becomes dull. In extreme fear, one will see the forms of ghosts and demons. Life comes to an end, becoming an object of pity. Near death, it is difficult to complete practice. Thus it is said. Fifth, this is the teaching that one does not become weary of this life because one has not developed aversion to illusions. If one does not understand the impermanence of compounded things, one will not turn away from samsara, this is the enemy of practicing liberation, and there is nothing more harmful than this. Even if one understands the Dharma, one has no motivation to practice. Not focusing on actual practice, its merits will not become provisions for the next life. What is the reason for this? Because the mind that clings to permanence, the attachment to inherent existence, has not been severed, so one will argue endlessly. This is precisely because impermanence has not arisen in the mind.

Therefore, if a mind that does not dwell on death arises in the continuum of a person, then one is not attached to this life but takes the next life as primary. For example, a guest during a trading season does not make a living in the merchant's land but accumulates provisions for his own journey. Similarly, one who has generated impermanence does not make a living for this life but makes a living for going to the next world. Therefore, a person in whose continuum the mind of death has arisen cannot possibly accomplish meaningless worldly affairs. One does not generate thoughts of trivial matters, does not accumulate unnecessary wealth, and cannot accept the glory of this life. When impermanence arises in the continuum, it is simultaneous with the reversal of the mind of this life. Without laziness and with nothing lacking, one strives day and night in virtue and respects the well-spoken Dharma. If a mind that does not dwell on death arises in the continuum of a person, then the mental factors of virtue arising from faith, like iron attracted to a magnet, gather in the mind of that person. The mind of remembering death is the best of all antidotes. A practitioner who is close to mindfulness and the mind of death is a fire that burns afflictions. Generating mindfulness of impermanence is water that washes away the defilements of the eight worldly concerns. Knowing that all phenomena are destroyed is the wind that encourages diligence and rejoices in virtue. Realizing that this life is like dew on the tip of a blade of grass is the fertile ground for cultivating the tree of faith. Remembering death in the mind is the axe that cuts off the root of evil. The thought of knowing that this life is impermanent is the boat that liberates from the ocean of existence. The mind of death arising in the continuum is the ladder for climbing to the palace of liberation. Being accompanied by mindfulness of impermanence is the wish-fulfilling jewel that accomplishes desires and fulfills hopes. It is crucial to generate mindfulness and the mind of death for the virtue of accomplishing the stainless path of liberation. If one does not know the impermanence of compounded phenomena, one will not be disgusted with the affairs of this life. That is the root of evil, so it is afflicted by five faults. If one is not disgusted with the affairs of this life, then one will not find the opportunity to practice Dharma, this is one. Because one is not disgusted with this life, one cannot focus on the work one is doing, this is two. Because one is not disgusted with this life, one does not associate with practitioners.
