Sa. Realization does not arise in one's own continuum. Dispute. Therefore, three destroying demons are created, namely, because self-appearance is impure, the Buddha field is not purified. From the afflictive self-continuum, the cause of samsara is accumulated. Because realization has not arisen, the wheel of existence is not destroyed. Thus, virtues do not arise in old age. Aro's Gray Encouragement says: An old man who has become old is frightening, with white hair, wrinkles gathered, and the body all broken down. When sitting, the buttocks hit the ground, and when standing, four limbs are planted. Thus, it is also said in The Jewel Ornament: The essence of sharp practice and wisdom, like the eyes of a lion, stare intently, causing the outer appearances to ripen. Like the eyes of a peacock, blink, causing the innate nature to ripen. With the power of three qualities, transform conceptualization into wisdom. With the power of arising, liberate from the confusion on the object. So it is. The practice of decline that occurs after old age makes it somewhat difficult to manifest the desired meaning. Outwardly, the desired meaning is like a one-armed man going to the Golden Land. Accomplishment in old age does not manifest meaning. Inwardly, it is like a blind painter. Practice in old age does not manifest meaning. The extent to which meaning is not manifested is like expecting the color of a conch shell on a tiger skin. Not manifesting becomes the root of faults, so now three faults will arise, like a one-armed man going to the Golden Land. Outwardly, one cannot recognize the delusion of object-appearance and mind. Like a blind painter, inwardly, one cannot see that conceptualization is empty of its own nature. Like the color of a tiger skin does not change, ordinary consciousness does not change. Because of that fault, three major disputes have now been created. First, because delusion is not recognized, pure appearance does not arise. Because conceptualization is not seen as self-liberated, afflictions arise spontaneously. Because ordinary consciousness has not changed, realization does not arise in one's own continuum.

Sitting, the buttocks touch the ground; standing, four limbs support. Unsteady steps, the body sways and deforms, accompanied by fearful chest collapses and creaking of joints and bones. The complexion fades, the face is sallow and emaciated, with tears in the eyes. Muscles waste away, skin dries up, and the network of veins becomes visible. Eyes and ears become unclear, teeth loosen. One babbles and enjoys talking. Forgetfulness, memory declines, and awareness fades. Experiencing extreme fear, one may see the forms of demons and spirits. Life reaches its end, becoming an object of compassion. Approaching death, it is difficult to complete practice. Thus it is said. Fifth, this is to show that without generating disgust for illusory appearances, one will not turn away from this life. If one does not understand that conditioned phenomena are impermanent, Then, the so-called "not turning the mind away from samsara" means that there is no greater enemy to achieving liberation than this, because even if one knows the Dharma, one has no motivation to practice, and the merits of not focusing on practice do not become provisions for the next life. What is the reason for this? It is because the mind that clings to permanence and the attachment to inherent existence have not been severed, so one falls into trouble. This is precisely because impermanence has not arisen in the mindstream. If a mind of not wanting to stay and of death arises in a person's mindstream, then he will not cling to this life but will regard the next life as the most important thing. For example, a guest at a market does not worry about the affairs of the market, but accumulates the goods and provisions that he will take away with him. Similarly, a person in whom impermanence has arisen does not worry about the affairs of this life, but worries about going to the next life. If the thought of death arises in the mindstream, one will not meaninglessly do worldly things, one will not generate meaningless competitive thoughts, one will not accumulate unnecessary wealth, and one will not accept the glory of this life. The arising of impermanence and the turning away from this life occur simultaneously. One will not be lazy or dissatisfied, but will diligently engage in virtuous deeds day and night, and will respect the well-spoken Dharma. If a mind of not wanting to stay and of death arises in a person's mindstream, then the virtuous mind and mental factors arising from faith, like a magnet attracting iron, will gather in that person's mind. The mind of remembering death is the most supreme of all antidotes, and the practitioner who is accompanied by mindfulness, the thought of death, and a spiritual friend is a fire that burns away afflictions. Thinking about impermanence.
