The term "abiding" refers to three ways of explaining the basis, path, and fruit. Even if not swayed by sectarian views, when initially establishing the foundation in a being's continuum, without the fetters of laziness in the faith of aspiration, for one without intelligence like a bee sipping nectar, if circumstances allow, a virtuous friend, in the ear Explaining the faults of samsara and imparting pith instructions, but because they lack the faith of aspiration, their mind will not abide even for a moment in the suffering of the three lower realms, thus they lack the fortune for Dharma practice. Secondly, for the mind desiring liberation and nirvana, during the intermediate time of practicing the path, the initial faith is marred by the impurity of delusion, for one without the readiness like the moon reflecting in the ocean, even if a supreme lama, in the ear, speaks the essence of a pure lineage, but because the other person lacks the initial faith, their mind will not abide in the infallibility of cause and effect, therefore their vision of the path of practice is meaningless. Thirdly, when a practitioner enters the noble path, at the final time of uniting with the fruit, for the faith of unwavering conviction in the continuum, without the mind of doubt, like meeting someone familiar from the past, for one without definite knowledge, even if a venerable lama, in the ear, speaks of the direct path of secret mantra, if practiced, such signs and experiences will arise, Even with such explanations, due to the lack of unwavering conviction, the mind will not abide in the view of the five elements' arising stages, therefore, where is the measure of their own continuum? Where is the place to recognize the nature of their own mind? This is corresponding to the capacities of beings. As it is also said in the Jewel Heap Sutra: "For those without faith and conviction, beings will not see the path of practice, the stages of signs will not appear, therefore they do not know the measure of their own superior, middling, and inferior faculties, the stages of arising in the continuum, they will not see practice and experience." Fifthly, because aversion has not arisen from suffering, therefore they do not recognize the cause of rebirth, if not turned away from samsara, they will not believe in karma and its effects, and their actions will not be upright. The term "actions will not be upright" means that because worldly illusory things are grasped as real, therefore, in that, on the objects of self and mine, the power of grasping and being grasped increases, therefore.
