The King of Mind Departing! At the time of death, even if one has lived in the human realm for a hundred years, at that time, one percent of the Bardo's appearance will come to greet them. The memory of things that were previously named will naturally cease. For even a moment, they will not think that they have lived in the human realm. The term "Kham Che" refers to the end of time. Even if all beings attain the eight great accomplishments, they are still "Kham Che" because the Lord of Death will not let them go. For the Lord of Death, there is no antidote, hence "Kham Che." There is nothing that is not a cause of death. Nothing benefits the Lord of Death, so it is "Kham Che," because there are no immortal beings. From "Eliminating the Sorrows of Ashvagosha": On the earth or in the heavenly realms, are there some who are born and do not die? Have you seen any? Have you heard of any? Or do you doubt? If the bodies of the Buddhas, adorned with marks and signs, even the stone body is impermanent, like the essence of a water tree, what need is there to mention other sentient beings? That's all. The fourth is not severing attachment to the appearance of objects. Knowing that one is going to die yet not severing attachment. Still speaking last words, this is to say that nothing can be done for the patient, because the body is tilting downwards, knowing that they are going to die. Knowing that they cannot live long, the attached person does not sever attachment to the world. Even though they are dying, they tell those who remain, "Do this, do that," and write a will. This is the final word, because they cannot say more than that in that place, so it is called the last word. The fifth is that the necessary things are not remembered and are postponed until the end. Even imitating other refuges is done at that time. This is to say that sentient beings are all of the nature of suffering. At the time of birth, they cannot resist the power of demons. The power of aging cannot be endured even if nailed to an iron stake. The disease of karma cannot be cured by a young doctor. Thus, the suffering of birth, aging, sickness, and death is like a ripple in water, one following another. Putting the arm as a pillow, putting the buttocks as a cushion, relatives surrounding them, dripping cotton into the mouth. At that time, the wind of attachment escapes first, so the tongue cannot taste the six flavors of food. After that, the clear wind also follows, so the radiance of the face disappears. After the signs of death appear, the doctor places the pulse on the armpit. Taking care of the patient

Therefore, a brief farewell was made. At dawn on Tuesday, since there is no refuge in death other than the Dharma, they say, "Please bring so-and-so," and then join their palms together near that person. The patient leans on their back, performing the act of taking refuge, which is called imitating others, is imitating what they say, "The best of the two-legged." Doing this at that time is indeed giving empowerment to the corpse, putting on armor after being wounded, and the refuge of death, these three things were slightly modified. Sixth, the faults of samsara. This refers to not stopping indulgence with mindfulness. Saying, "Who shall I go with?" and reciting many lamentations, is saying to the women nearby, "You will be well! What should I do? Where am I going? What kind of things will happen to me?" This is what is said. Seventh, this refers to the arising of a bad sense of regret. At the edge of the bed, many regrets arise, saying, "The future of the heartless is erased," this is because the person who seeks the afterlife will not always lie down in that place, so it is called the edge of the bed. Because the Dharma of hearing, thinking, and meditating has not been completed at the time of death, Therefore, many regrets arise at that time, thinking, "In the past, I used to listen to the Dharma at so-and-so Lama's place, why didn't I listen at that time? Now it's too late, I shouldn't have done those sins!" The so-called "heartless person" refers to those who do not remember the Dharma in their youth and waste their lives on the path of indulgence. The so-called "his future is erased" refers to not realizing that old age has arrived and suddenly dying, remembering the Dharma at the time of death is of no use, it is too late. It is too late to regret at that time. Eighth, this refers to not having free time to ripen the many virtues accumulated in the past. Asking, "Is taking refuge helpful at that time?", this is asking from the perspective of having the merit of reciting "Namo Buddhaya" (Tibetan: ན་མོ་བུདྡྷ་ཡ་, Sanskrit Devanagari: नमो बुद्धाय, Sanskrit Romanization: Namo Buddhāya, Literal Chinese meaning: Homage to the Buddha). Ninth, this refers to always relying on the state of mind at the time of death to practice the Dharma. If you remember the suffering of that time now, then doing good deeds or there may be some help, this is because nothing can help you more than the Dharma. The kind of suffering that is known at the time of death, if now, in this time without illness, the concept of impermanence and the thought of death arise, then there is no time to be idle even for a moment.
