It was said that if one does not practice genuine Dharma, one should seek a way to enjoy this life. Again, on one occasion, the Lama said: Some people, although they give the name of "Dharma" to something that has not been subdued by Dharma, actually focus only on accumulating possessions. Possessions are the field of samsara, an obstacle to the path of liberation, the basis of miserliness, the source of leakage, the cause of attachment, the seed of craving, the container of afflictions, and the root of suffering. Accumulating wealth in league with sin is all madness. It is utter foolishness. For those who are attached to and cling to wealth, there is no opportunity to be liberated from the bonds of existence. Enlightenment arises from non-attachment, as it is said in the Compendium: The Victorious Ones attain enlightenment through non-attachment. In general, as long as attachment to things has not been reversed, there will be no true Dharma practice, no matter how long it takes, it was said. Again, it was said: If this consciousness that grasps at things and appearances is not reversed, even if one has great learning, one has not been subdued by Dharma. Ordinary conceptual thoughts will arise naturally. Even if one knows the three baskets of qualities, it is in vain if one's mind has not been transformed by the correct view. Please tell me, from where does attachment to this life arise? It arises from seeing suffering as an ornament. Samsara arises from seeing suffering as an ornament. If one recognizes samsara as a place of suffering, how can one not be disgusted with this life? All those who seek to understand the Dharma have not recognized that external appearances are like a magical illusion. They indulge in illusion with a mind of wrong attachment. There, on the root of afflictions, the branches of suffering grow. Habitually clinging to illusion brings the danger of no-self. We should understand the meaning of dependent origination, so that the cause of samsara will be naturally liberated, it was said. Someone asked: What is the cause for fulfilling aspirations? The answer was: This requires about four conditions: First, one must pray from a pure intention, not just with lip service (Tibetan: ཁའི་ཨཱཪྻ་པ་ལོ་, Sanskrit Devanagari: मुख आर्यपालो, Sanskrit Romanization: mukha āryapālo, Chinese literal meaning: mouth noble protector), but with a pure mind; second, one must not pray just once or twice, but repeatedly; third, one must not give alms casually, but accumulate merit in a special field of merit before praying; fourth, one must not pray for one's own benefit, but with the intention of benefiting others, adding prayers for others to one's aspirations. These four conditions must be complete.
