It is of no benefit to be able to preach the Dharma from the mouth without adhering to the meaning within. A teacher who is of no benefit to oneself or others is in danger of becoming like a parrot reciting the Dharma. It is better to practice one thing than to know a hundred, so we should strive to engage in virtuous deeds, he said. If devotion to the lama does not arise, is it not beneficial to give the letters of instruction? someone asked. He said: How could that be beneficial? If you do not cherish the lama in your heart, it is of no benefit to cherish his teachings. You cannot manage the stages and paths of a book box. Without practice, realization will not arise in the mindstream. In general, the lama is said to be superior to the Buddha. He is also said to be equal to the Buddha. But he is never said to be worse than the Buddha, because the path to liberation depends on the lama. If you only see the lama as someone with a big head and long legs, and do not understand the depths, then the book box will not cause view and meditation to arise in the mindstream, he said. He also said: In general, it is of no benefit to rely on the lama if your own practice is not progressing. No matter how foolish the lama is, know that if the student has no faith. You do not want the Buddha, but you want the letters. Is the lama not ashamed of that? If you are practicing, then you must complete mind training every morning. Although each maid has her own tricks, the principle of our tradition is that we do not give the letters of instruction until mind training is completed. If the important thing in the morning is not accomplished, what is the use of a box full of instructions? If practice is not progressing, then you will not see the need for Dharma, he said. Someone asked: What is meant by the key point of not transmitting the meaning into an image? Here, it means cutting off the attachment of the essence of meaning to symbols. It is important that the fundamental meaning is not lost in names and terms. There is no room for speech for symbols that transcend language. There is no room for thought for Dharma that transcends the mind. There is no room for meditation for true meaning. There is no concept for the deaf and dumb. There are no letters for true ultimate reality. Because there is no sect for the meaning of reality. The meaning of realization cannot be given by letters, he said. Someone asked: What is meant by the key point of the root taking its own ground? Because reality is established as without foundation, therefore, the additions to the view are cut off, and at that time the attachment to sects collapses. Because the mind does not fall into partiality, it takes its own ground. Practice without

Therefore, once it is determined, the clinging to meditation will be eliminated, and there, the calculation of yes and no will collapse. There, the expectations and reliance on what is to be accomplished will be released, thereby grasping one's own footing. Once the foundation of harmonious integration is erected, the clinging to behavior will be eliminated, and the defilements of the eight worldly concerns will be cleansed. Since one does not strive for the high path, there, the yogi will grasp his own footing. They said so. When asked what is meant by the key to not letting behavior fall into attachment and aversion, the answer is: This refers to completely uprooting the leaking foundation. When consciousness lets go of its clinging to self, the next day, the continuation of attachment and aversion will be interrupted. At that time, the roots of afflictions are burned, and therefore, the seeds that grow from them rot. There, the object based on inverted and confused thoughts will not be established. There, since delusion dissipates without cause, the web of existence will collapse. At that time, since samsara is not established, there is no need to accomplish nirvana, and therefore, one naturally obtains the freedom of not being bound. They said so. When asked what is meant by the key to not letting practice fall into adversity, the answer is: This refers to transforming the wisdom that opposes unfavorable circumstances into the path. Generally speaking, it is impossible for there to be no enemies on the path, therefore, the key to not letting practice fall into adversity lies in applying the antidote. Here, since unfavorable circumstances are transformed into the path, adverse conditions will appear as assistance. There, merely by abandoning what should be abandoned, bad conditions will rob the yogi of laziness. At that time, with regard to the qualities of the Dharma related to it, the mind of desire will not arise. They said so. When asked what is meant by the key to preventing attachment from arising from its root, It was said: If you do not know how to remove the defilement of obvious attachment to the experience of bliss, it will become the root of attachment because of rust. Experience will not produce gain. Bliss has no gain, clarity has no essence, non-thought has no trace. Since these two have not cut off the ground and path, here, by lengthening or shortening the time of meditation, the nest of attachment will be destroyed. Generally speaking, if attachment arises to the object of things, it should be regarded as an enemy of the path and cut off. It must be cut off. If it is not cut off, the skill of subsequent attainment will not arise. Once the clinging to existence is cut off and let go, non-existence will naturally abide in its own place. Once the edge is cut off, one will be separated from existence and non-existence. Once the object is cut off, non-object will appear. Once the thought is cut off, freedom from elaboration will appear. If attached, it will not
