Having many friends, being skilled in business, and being deeply involved with worldly affairs, merely creating an illusion of harmony and integration, one cannot become a true saint. A true saint must be different from worldly people, as the kind teacher said. In general, it is not enough to merely know the key points of secret mantra; its essence must arise in the continuum. To make the experience arise from within, without the guidance of instructions, merely giving the words will not lead to the path. Relying on the skillful means of the guru is crucial. Some seem to focus only on the words, but books cannot completely dispel doubts. Rather than having hundreds and thousands of books, it is better to completely determine that all phenomena of samsara and nirvana are without inherent existence; this is more excellent. If one clings to the reality of phenomena, one cannot liberate all that is to be known. If one does not enter the lineage of the guru's practice, even knowing the doctrines of all schools is useless. The key to my own ordinary state is that I indulge in confusion and revel in delusion. If someone says that attaining the state of perfect and complete enlightenment of the Buddha is to be completely liberated from the extremes of elaboration, then the deities with the eyes of wisdom would be ashamed, as the kind teacher said. When a result-oriented yogi is in a state of great ordinariness, if someone asks, "Are the virtuous actions of body and speech the same as before?" the answer is, "At this time, one does not deliberately abandon virtuous actions, but they naturally cease." For example, for someone who experiences all phenomena as illusion, appearance without attachment is like cutting off the clinging to reality. Merely working hard on the cause will generate joy in the result. At that time, because the desire for the result has disappeared, deliberately cultivating the virtuous actions of the cause will naturally cease. This is more excellent than before. For example, if a girl is only satisfied with looking at her own appearance, then wearing one ornament when she becomes a queen is more beautiful than wearing six ornaments on her body before; the power is stronger here, what is the benefit? It seems that we have not pushed the practice of the cause to the extreme, as the kind teacher said. If one wants to attain the fruit of enlightenment through asceticism, then merely relying on worldly methods and self-proclaimed clever practice will not cut through the stages and paths of realization. Because this is the key to being contrary to the state of the noble ones. If one desires liberation in the next life on the one hand, and clings to the attachment and aversion of this life on the other hand, these two are contradictory.

Gathering together, one will not abide. Without accumulating a crowd, one will never encounter this path. Even a leper or a blind person who finds this path is fortunate. If no other affairs interrupt, in two years, one will bid farewell to samsara. In the kingdom of Phan-yul, there are two people who definitely want to become Buddhas. They have everything, yet they have nothing. Therefore, even in the four regions of Tibet, it is rare. During the time of Lord Atisha, he lamented: "What wrong have I, the lama, done?" Lord Atisha said: "Since I came to Tibet, I have not been of any benefit to sentient beings." There are already many virtuous spiritual friends. Besides that, one needs someone who truly wants to become a Buddha. If one has the thought of wanting to attain Buddhahood, then the kind lama is the one who possesses the means. Gompa Wangdor complained to the lama that he was not given instructions. The lama said: "That person has been with me since childhood, living together, eating and drinking together, one dies and the other follows. Something that should not have happened has happened. Since Wang has not fully matured, how can I give the instructions of secret mantra? Here too, one should not show the essential instructions to someone who has not completed mind training. It is not right to proclaim secrets to an unsuitable vessel. His own mind training has been cut into hundreds and thousands of pieces. Flowers and offerings should not be given to infants. It is not right to be stingy with the Dharma. Why not give it to someone like Jowo's son, Yoruwa, who eats roasted flour, endures suffering, and strives in practice? Tea tastes sweet, but it is useless to Tenne. When thirsty, one goes to Gzira Dzong to drink water. Mixing practice with worldly affairs, the signs of the path and the stone bones will not meet. The kind lama said this. Generally speaking, giving instructions is useless. There are many thresholds in Ani's alley. Without relying on hearing and thinking about the scriptures, but only pursuing the essence, like this, view and meditation will arise in the continuum. Easier than pith instructions and mind training, such a thing has never happened before to accomplished ones, and will not happen in the future. The prince, the lion of men, Acharya, who directly saw the truth of Dharma nature, was completely embraced by the son of the ascetic, the glorious heap of jewels. Between Shakyamuni Buddha and there is only that one lineage. Receiving instructions from Dampa Rinpoche.
