Compared to knowing many virtues without practice, it is better to learn one virtue that has been practiced, as it will benefit both oneself and others. In particular, the experiences and realizations of practitioners, as well as the blessings, must be purchased from the lama at a precious price. If one cannot even offer a tael of gold for tea or a decent set of clothes, then studying the letters becomes rigid, and the scriptures cannot become the path. A person who has not served the lama cannot obtain secret instructions. Even if they do, it will only turn a student who is merely a scholar into a so-called accomplished one. In general, a person who has not severed the attachments of this world will naturally not encounter the path, as the kind lama has said. If someone like Zhangtsun Zhon Seng (ཞང་བཙུན་གཞོན་སེང་) cannot be generous in offering to the lama, then they cannot truly practice. A miserly person does not practice. Because strong attachment to material things is the demon of view and meditation. Even if you stuff books in front of such a person, it will be of no use. If you were given the choice between a collection of instructions and a tael of gold, they would definitely choose the gold. Even if instructions are given, no experience will arise in the mindstream of such a person. For a faithful person who is devoted to practice, there is no need to deliberately serve the lama. Just as one offers the most beautiful flowers, the lama will also try to give the best teachings. If not, there is nothing to be done. A person who is capable but unwilling to offer to the lama is like being attached to their possessions. We are the same, if we are stingy with the key instructions that the holy ones have kept in their hearts, then we can only beg for some saliva and then ask for teachings, as the kind lama has said. In general, there are few who truly embark on the path of Dharma and transform merit into provisions for the next life. Some people use Dharma to make money, and use money to support their wives and children. They are ruined by thinking they understand merit, because the Dharma becomes a cause for samsara. Those who sell the lama's instructions for food and wealth, and use everything for worldly pleasures, are insane. Some people may learn a lot of Dharma, but they do not rely on a genuine lama, nor do they practice. They only focus on worldly affairs. A demon has entered the heart of such a person. Some people collect many lamas' instructions, and fill their rooms with many scriptures, but their own mindstream remains ordinary. Such a person is just chewing ashes. Some people may engage in practice, but when signs of progress appear or when they encounter difficulties, they abandon their practice, start a family, and even wipe their child's snot with their own mouths.

That Jowo who says, "Take refuge in the Lama when you are in poverty" is mistaken. Without merit, he takes a high position in his youth. Others suffer first, and when they offer advice, he realizes that his treasure is empty. That Jowo who is old and drooling over others is like eating feces. The kind Lama said. In general, if this practice is not like patching up instructions, then all the vessels of the Jowos are filled with profound instructions and given. Because we have knowledge and look inward, we see suffering as an ornament. Because we adhere to the fundamental meaning, it is like a lawsuit demon that does not give Dharma. It seems that we have not turned our minds away from samsara. When we wake up in the morning and know that the things of this life are meaningless, we should go to the path of liberation. Merely striving for worldly success and expecting to attain the fruit of Bodhi seems to exhaust the warmth of all the Jowos' practice. Learning to write and Dharma is good, but what do you do with the Dharma you have learned? It seems that you are learning all your life, when will you practice? Please think about how many years you have lived and reflect on your own mind. Even if you have determined your lifespan, is there time to practice? After death, just put a kettle on the corpse! The kind Lama said, let's see if it can interrupt the Bardo. Someone asked: Are mind training and asceticism not the same retreat? Answer: It is like cutting off the seedling of a medicinal tree, no one can benefit except the patient. Let it grow, and when the trunk of the medicinal tree is lush, the leaves, flowers, fruits, branches, bark, roots, etc. can bring endless benefits. Similarly, if we use the yogi who is the root for activities, it is like cutting off the seedling of a medicinal tree. Be careful at the beginning. Adhere to the root path, and when the fruit matures, it is like the trees are lush. The benefit to others will come at that time. These two practices of retreat, in general, are the same as what was said yesterday. But specifically, when training the mind, do not abandon wisdom. When practicing asceticism, do not rely on mudras. When training the mind, the merit of the body will increase. When practicing asceticism, do not circumambulate.
