Regarding the Lama's instructions, one should have a fundamental understanding of both breadth and narrowness. Geshe Gyachu Mikpa said: For those who have entered the three paths of White Guidance, Black Guidance, and Red Guidance, if they do not remove the impurities on the path, it is not certain that realization will arise in their continuum. When asked what White Guidance is and what the impurities on the path are, the master replied: The so-called White Guidance is not words that arise from the patterns of letters, but the oral instructions of the master, which are called "oral instructions, road guidance." The words of Je Tsongkhapa are the essence of the lotus in his mouth, and they enter the mind through words. Just as camphor, the king of medicine, is more effective than bitter medicine for treating bile diseases, camphor is more likely to become the king of medicine than bitter medicine. For those who have received the blessings of the master, it is more beneficial to listen to the words of ordinary people than to listen to the words of sutras and treatises. If it is beneficial to the mind, then it is a key instruction, so even the good words of children should be accepted. Whatever gives rise to certainty, grasp that root. To open the door of realization, it is not only important to value the oral transmission of key instructions. When Geshe Kharakpa was building a wall, a child said, "This bird's wisdom is extraordinary," and thus realization arose. The teachings of Phobrang Dingpa did not come from the sutras and treatises. If you have your own key instructions, explain them with other methods. No matter who speaks good words, do not ask questions and answers one by one, like a question and an answer. That is the impurity of White Guidance. Think about it with your heart, do not ask many questions like seeds and seedlings, that is impurity. Do not determine the other person's many words with your own one word, like playing and chatting, that is the impurity of White Guidance. In general, meaningless questions and answers will not be done by foolish people or wise people, that will expose one's own shallowness. Hunger and thirst are the nectar of food, just as that is the essence of birds, knowledge is the wisdom of entering the ultimate truth of realization. The king of key instructions is oral instruction. Oral transmission of key instructions should be suppressed, do not doubt, it is very wonderful. All pleasant words, rejoice, rejoice. Thus it was said. When asked what Red Guidance is and what its impurities are, the master said: The so-called Red Guidance

Without establishing the instructions of the practice lineage in written form, but rather as the tradition of the Guru's practice, namely: first, mind training; second, asceticism; third, equal taste; fourth, subsequent; fifth, entrusting meditation to the master. These are completed in the stages of the path. If the direct defilements are not removed, just as a face cannot be seen if a magic mirror is not cleaned of tarnish, signs will not appear on the path. Therefore, there are three preliminaries for entering the path: First, taking refuge as the foundation, like a field relying on water and fertilizer, one must cut off wrong knowledge. Taking refuge as the path, like a house supported by pillars, one must abandon meaningless actions and their root. Generating aspirational bodhicitta, like a boatman preparing a boat, one must bury the root of anger in the heart. Entering into action bodhicitta, like a great ship entering the ocean, one must untie the bonds of laziness. Blessings are perfected, like glazing a pottery vessel, one must remove the obstacles of doubt. Mind training is like a wish-fulfilling jewel, do not scrutinize the faults of the Guru. Asceticism is like a hermit erecting an altar to the gods, do not allocate shares of the eight worldly dharmas. Equal taste is like a drop of water merging into the ocean, do not accept or reject contradictory things. Subsequent is like a disease being completely cured, one must pull out the pegs of grasping at subject and object. Entrusting meditation to the master is like being freed from the iron shackles of a prison, one must raise the watchtower of antidotes. There, the innate, co-emergent wisdom abiding in oneself is manifested, and the practitioner attains the wisdom of self-awareness in the true nature of reality. By this, illusory appearances are purified, the cause of samsara is liberated, and now there is no power to prevent enlightenment, just as a lion is born from the womb, a garuda hatches from the egg. The yogi is the prison of the body, abandoning the aggregates of appropriation, and entering into the three kayas of the Buddhas is simultaneous. For those who have not seen the oral instructions, it is meaningless for view, meditation, and conduct to arise in the continuum. The tenets of the scriptures have not been understood by the wise, the root of panditas wandering in samsara is that view, meditation, and conduct have not arisen. There are many who are eloquent and geshes with watery eyes, because realization has not increased, so the path has not been realized.
