Is it self-produced? Is it produced from another? Is it produced from both? Or should it be examined whether it is produced without a cause? If it is said to be self-produced, is it produced from an established self or an unestablished self? If you think it is produced from an established self, then, since it is already established, there is no need to be born again. If it is born again after it is established, it will become an endless birth. If it is believed to be born from an unestablished self, since the cause is not established, it is not suitable as a producer; since the effect is not established, it is not suitable as a product. If it is said to be produced from another, is it produced from another that is permanent or another that is impermanent? It is unreasonable to be born from the permanent, because the permanent is not suitable as the cause of the producer. If it is said to be born from another impermanent, is the fruit produced at the same time as itself, or at different times? It is unreasonable for the producer and the product to be produced at the same time. If the times are different, the cause has ceased and disappeared when the fruit is established, and the fruit has not yet been produced when the cause is established. Because it is not another substance, it is unreasonable for the cause to produce the fruit from another substance. It is also unreasonable to be born from both, because the one nature of cause and effect contradicts being another substance, and being another substance contradicts being one nature. Moreover, since self-birth and other-birth have been refuted, it is unreasonable to be born from both. It is also unreasonable to be born without a cause. Because there is no cause for birth, it cannot be seen with characteristics in any place or time. Therefore, although it is seen to be born from a cause, and self-birth and other-birth are refuted, it appears to be born, but in reality there is no truly established birth. Therefore, one should practice by realizing that the inner mind appearance is empty like the sky, and that outer things are all truly empty like an echo. If the nature of the mind is inherently empty, then how do the infinite thoughts of virtue, vice, and non-indication arise? Just as various phenomena such as clouds, vapors, thunder, lightning, and rain arise in the sky, the nature of the mind is inherently empty, but various phenomena also arise. Just as clouds and the like arise from the sky and then dissolve back into the sky, no matter how many thoughts arise in the mind, they will eventually dissolve into the nature of the mind itself. In the Prajnaparamita Sutra, it says that conditioned phenomena
