To be separated from unfavorable factors is the Truth of Cessation. There are also three skillful means: skillful means for perfecting virtuous qualities, skillful means for abandoning one's own faults, and skillful means for leading others into virtue. The first has six aspects: the causal condition enables the nourishment and growth of faith, the lordly condition holds it closely in the continuum, the object condition accomplishes it without error, the immediately preceding condition opens understanding, and skillful means accomplish it without fixation. The first is: faith is greater than before, diligence is greater than before, meditative concentration is clearer than before, wisdom is more excellent than before, and it is able to nourish and grow the seeds of all virtuous qualities. Holding it in the continuum through the lordly condition is: closely associating Dharma with the continuum of a person. If Dharma and the person go their separate ways, because one is not skilled in generating the means of counteracting, faith will flow towards the direction of samsara. If it flows towards subduing enemies and protecting friends, etc., faith will be scattered outwards, the thief of discursive thoughts will enter the mind, the antidote will be upside down, the yidam will go to the future, Dharma practice will become something to be protected, Dharma will be expected in the future and for old age, skillful means will become a mere image, what should be abandoned will not be cut off, and it will be difficult to cure a patient with distorted practice. Diligence will be lost again in endless fatigue. Today do this, tomorrow do that, the day after tomorrow do that, etc., so Dharma and the person cannot be integrated. Because skillful means are distorted, do not let it go that way, but be skilled in generating virtue in one's own continuum. The meaning of the thief of discursive thoughts entering the mind is: a thief is said to harm without being noticed. Similarly, although one appears to be practicing Dharma, without the desire to attain perfect enlightenment or the mind of renunciation, one strives for the happiness and fame of this world. Even if one engages in the three practices of hearing, thinking, and meditating, they will not become the cause of nirvana without one's awareness. One boasts of abiding in virtue, but in reality, even the happiness of a good rebirth that one desires will not arise, because one has not turned one's mind away from this life. One is deluded by oneself without realizing it, so the antidote is upside down. One verbally admits to being a practitioner, and the name is also given as a practitioner. Others also consider him a practitioner, so the body and speech are outwardly adorned, appearing peaceful, gentle, kind, devout, and virtuous.

If you don't do it this way, none of this will be believed. If there is no belief: Thinking that offerings and alms, etc., will not come, adorning external appearances, and allowing all inverted thoughts to arise, appearing outwardly as if good, is like wrapping a wound with fat and leaving the arrow fragment inside. This is not a true practitioner, but a hypocritical act of deceiving others. Driven entirely by unwholesome motivation, one does not transcend samsara. Putting the yidam in the future means not practicing Dharma now, saying, "Now I must practice Dharma," and because one does not recognize one's own faults, one cannot counteract them with remedies. Dharma practice becomes something to be guarded. Although the virtuous actions of body and speech seem diligent, one desires to attain happiness and avoid suffering, so one practices through acceptance and rejection. At the time of practice, one cannot let go of hope; during the main practice, one cannot let go of attachment; afterwards, one cannot let go of doubt. Why is this? Because one does not recognize that the thought of wanting happiness is mistaken, so one treats it as something to be pursued. One does not recognize that suffering is a guide to happiness, so one treats it as something to be abandoned. One does not recognize that happiness and suffering are of one taste in emptiness, so acceptance and rejection, or thoughts of attachment and aversion, arise in the mind. One wants to counteract them with remedies, but even relying on remedies, one does not gain even a small amount of cessation in the mind. Because one is attached to acceptance and rejection, one cannot conquer the enemy of grasping and being grasped. To rely on the future and old age for Dharma practice means not practicing Dharma now, but wanting to practice in the future. Now, one does not counteract what should be abandoned with remedies, but hopes to counteract it in the future. The method becomes a mere image because one does not recognize that one is mistaken. One cannot let go of thoughts of acceptance and rejection. Or, one practices with the hope of cutting off what has not been cut off. Because one clings to the object, the method becomes a mere image, so one cannot let go of what should be abandoned. Because one has not let go, one cannot rise above meditation, cannot reach the peak. One follows witchcraft and medicine, etc., to cure illness. For a powerless remedy, one needs to reverse the arrow shaft. Although one has cinnabar oneself, one has to seek it from the knife sharpener. Therefore, the meaning of the sutras and tantras does not match one's own mind. Not believing in the words of the guru and the Buddha, one despises them, and therefore one becomes an object of criticism by wise people. Practicing in that way, one falls into wrong practice, wrong view, wrong meditation, and wrong conduct. Practice
