It is necessary to rely on him, because he explains the intention of what the Buddha said, so one must follow him. This avoids non-methods and actually shows all methods. First, examine the student's behavior for good or bad, condemn bad behavior, praise good behavior, prevent dangerous situations, introduce good paths, and become a necessary help. This is a spiritual friend similar to a good worldly relative. A good relative refers to parents raising their children, observing whether those children's behavior conforms to the rules. If it does not conform, they severely punish them through opposition and beating, or coax them with sweets. Similarly, the spiritual friend also examines the student's behavior for good or bad; if the behavior is bad, they punish; if the behavior is good, they adjust the student's behavior through praise. Parents praise and proclaim the virtues of their children, saying that they are stable, intelligent, have a sense of shame, and are generous. Just like that, the teacher should also inspire the student's interest, give praise, saying that this person has great faith, great wisdom, great devotion, etc., and through praising virtues, make the virtues grow more and more. Preventing dangerous situations means that if parents see their children engaging in things they should not do, even things that endanger their lives, they will grab their hands and not let them do it. Similarly, if the teacher sees the student engaging in the wrong path, they will also grab their hands and not let go. Fourth, introducing the good path means that just as parents lead their children by the hand and have them engage in virtuous activities that bring wealth, respect, and fame, the teacher should also have them engage in the three studies of hearing, thinking, and meditation, which are the methods for generating all the qualities of the path. Becoming a necessary help is like parents punishing their children's bad behavior, praising good behavior, introducing the good path, and giving good possessions, the teacher should also help with the three studies of hearing, thinking, and meditation, bless to remove obstacles, make the unclear clear, make the ununderstood understood, and in this way, become a necessary help.

A virtuous friend with outflows is extremely important. A virtuous friend who is skilled in means is like enemies, demons, and diseases, etc. By relying on them and cultivating patience, all sins and obscurations can be exhausted, and supreme enlightenment can be quickly attained. The basis for a patient person is that when others harm them, they hear harsh words, and they attain excellent results simultaneously. Omniscience arises from patience. As a basis for cultivating patience, there is nothing more excellent than enemies, obstacles, and diseases. Therefore, one must rely on these as companions for generating enlightenment. The uncommon cause for becoming a Buddha is patience. If there are no enemies, demons, or diseases, etc., there is no method for cultivating patience. Therefore, patience arises from relying on enemies, demons, etc. Enemies, demons, etc., should be recognized as virtuous friends who are skilled in the means of cultivating patience. Furthermore, the bodies of enemies and demons serve as indicators. By relying on them, one either cultivates patience and attains Buddhahood, or one generates anger and falls into hell. These two are indicators that say, "Choose for yourselves." Cultivating patience towards the harsh words spoken by others is deeper than the guru's instructions. For instructions, one must first listen, then contemplate, and finally meditate, which requires great effort. Even after doing so, some people do not know whether the instructions will become the path or not. However, for the harsh words of others, one does not need to make great effort in listening, contemplating, and meditating. It is enough to simply cultivate patience. Furthermore, cultivating patience when seeing enemies and demons is more meritorious than seeing the face of a deity. Even if one sees the face of a deity, it only thins the obscurations. Cultivating patience towards enemies and demons can exhaust all previously accumulated sins and perfect a vast accumulation of merit. By cultivating patience in this way, one is freed from the previous distinction between good and bad, or the distinction between what to abandon and what to adopt, and from all attachment and aversion. Therefore, a special path arises in one's being. May all be auspicious! One should remember that the body is superior to the deity, and the harsh words of others are superior to instructions. The words spoken by others
