Just as a wish-fulfilling jewel brings forth all that is needed and desired, so too, relying on a virtuous spiritual friend brings forth all pure white Dharma. A virtuous spiritual friend is like the earth in summer; just as relying on the earth in summer allows all things like trees, forests, and crops to grow, so too, relying on a virtuous spiritual friend brings forth all temporary and ultimate qualities. After generating longing for a virtuous spiritual friend, one needs an unwavering aspiration Bodhicitta like pure gold; just as gold does not change from yellow no matter how it is hammered or smelted, it is very important to make one's faith and longing for a virtuous spiritual friend unwavering and steadfast. Once that is born, one needs an increasing aspiration like the waxing moon; for example, just as the moon from the first to the fifteenth day of the lunar month gradually increases, so too, in order for longing for a virtuous spiritual friend to increase more and more, and to generate ultimate qualities, longing for the Dharma is the basis of all qualities. It is not enough to merely generate longing for the Dharma at first; if one sometimes thinks of practicing Dharma and sometimes does not, because the unwavering aspiration Bodhicitta like pure gold will regress, one needs to be like pure gold, never changing from the thought of always practicing Dharma: happy, one practices Dharma; suffering, one practices Dharma; sick, one practices Dharma; not sick, one practices Dharma; harmed by spirits, one practices Dharma; not harmed, one practices Dharma; great merit, one practices Dharma; little merit, one practices Dharma; respected by others, one practices Dharma; not respected, one practices Dharma; no matter what the circumstances, one's mind remains close to practicing Dharma without changing. When that happens, just as the moon increases from the first to the fifteenth day of the lunar month, the increasing aspiration to enter the Dharma must also be made to grow more and more. Secondly, entering the Bodhicitta, the preparatory action is like fire: for example, just as fire applied to firewood burns the firewood, so too, actually applying oneself to virtuous Dharma causes one to burn non-virtue, which is like firewood. Like engaging in the six perfections such as generosity, one burns firewood such as miserliness, which is contrary to them. Bodhicitta endowed with the perfection of generosity.

Now, the method of practice: First, adjust the mindset, and how to enter (practice). First, initially, the desire for generosity should be like the earth; then, the intention to give should be unwavering, like pure gold; then, the intention to give should increase more and more, like a waxing moon; then, upon engaging in generosity, one should learn to burn away stinginess like burning firewood. Second, how to enter (practice): one should base oneself on the Four Noble Truths, rely on virtuous spiritual friends, learn both skillful means and wisdom, and learn the four practices. First, stinginess is the truth of the origin of suffering. This is because in previous lives, due to the power of stinginess, one did not give. In this life, one still does not give. Even if one gives, it is impure. Impure objects are like poison and weapons, etc. Impure thoughts are clinging to the three spheres (of giver, receiver, and gift). Impure dedication is dedicating to the fruits of samsara, or dedicating to the lesser vehicles of Hearers and Solitary Realizers. Impure dedication will encounter unenjoyed possessions, leading to weariness of body, speech, and mind, or much harm from enemies and obstacles. One cannot give to others, nor can one enjoy oneself. One thinks: "These riches came from my own efforts. If they are used up in the future, there will be none left." Therefore, one is stingy with oneself, depriving oneself of food and clothing. Bound by stinginess, one has no control over enjoyment. Even if there is inexhaustible food, one cannot eat it. Even if there is inexhaustible clothing, one cannot wear it, being as stingy as guarding dregs of beer. The sutra says: "A wicked, stingy person is like a dog's tongue." The dog, though thirsty, even if it encounters the ocean, cannot drink deeply, but only licks with its tongue. A stingy person is the same. Therefore, clinging to wealth will eventually lead to endless thoughts. One clings to food and wealth, hates others taking it, suspects others will take it and binds it up. Giving to others is perfect, but due to ignorance, one does not know how to give. Relying on the three poisons of greed, hatred, and delusion, one is bound like poisoned food. If one examines the beginning and end well, even if one obtains pure enjoyment, one cannot...
