Do not accept bribes and gifts. Seeing the death of others, do not assume yourself to be eternal. Do not have strong attachment to relatives like guests at a market. Do not hoard possessions with miserliness like bees storing honey. Do not build a castle of attachment in your homeland, a resting place on a long journey. If you fear the suffering of birth and death, you should strive day and night with single-minded devotion to the Dharma. However, those without perseverance cannot endure hardship. It is difficult to meet a lama, yet they cast inauspicious stars upon the lama. The root of practice is devotion, but those without heart see nothing in the lama. Although it is said that the Buddha is one's own pure mind, foolish people seek the Buddha elsewhere. Those whose thoughts are completely reversed from the depths of their hearts cannot remember the Dharma at first, cannot understand even when they hear it, cannot gain autonomy, but submit to negative karma and become accustomed to wrong paths. Even if they enter the Dharma, they cannot reach the end. Such people are very tolerant of suffering but intolerant of happiness. They are able to give up their lives for profit and fame, but cannot do even a little hardship for the sake of the Dharma. They can travel all over Tibet and China for the sake of wealth, but cannot listen to the sacred Dharma. They can give gifts to a guide for a day, but cannot serve the lama. They fear the illness of this life and strive for rituals, but cannot practice the Dharma that prevents falling into the lower realms in the next life. These worldly illusory activities are like games, and they are distracted by games, separated from the Three Jewels, the refuge of refuge. They may enter the gates of three great cities, but there is never lasting companionship with harmonious relatives and friends, no lasting residence in built houses, and no lasting enjoyment of accumulated wealth. If you sincerely practice the Dharma, you must see your homeland as a prison. If you do not abandon your homeland, the five poisons will arise. You must see relatives as enemies; relatives are accomplices in suffering. You must see wealth as shackles; if you do not abandon wealth, you cannot reach the peak of attachment. You must destroy pride and arrogance; if you do not abandon the coquetry of the body, you cannot occupy a humble position. You must cut off attachment to desires; if you do not abandon attachment to the body, you cannot abandon attachment to possessions. You must abandon worldly gain and fame; if you do not destroy the pursuit of fame, you cannot escape the realm of the eight worldly concerns. If you want to practice genuine Dharma, you must cut off the horns of pride on your head.

Please take off the shoes of attachment. Be careful in walking, sitting, and lying down. Abandon speech. Abandon thoughts of samsara. In the field of faith, let the water of diligence flow. With the accumulation of merit as a contributing factor. Scatter the seeds of key instructions. Generate the sprouts of definite understanding. Be skilled in the embankments of conduct. Drive away negativity. Begin to do good. Drive out ignorance. Ignite the lamp of practice. Eliminate the treacherous straits of doubt. Rely on the companion of diligence. Without diligence, even if there is faith, it is like the field of a man of bad lineage. Like the wool of a woman of bad lineage. Like a jewel without prayer. Like a warrior without armor. Faith adorned with diligence is like cultivating a good field. Like praying to a jewel. Like raising a sail on a ship. Like tempering a weapon. Like whipping a horse. Like propelling with a bucket. Therefore, quickly cut off negativity. Quickly increase virtue. Put unnecessary things into the stomach. Rely on an unbroken lineage. It is very important that body, speech, and mind do not remain ordinary. The basis of all virtue is a pure mind. The contributing factor is the guru, the virtuous spiritual friend. The essence is the actions of body, speech, and mind that accomplish liberation. The method is the teachings of the three vehicles. The virtuous actions of the body should be learned like a householder plowing a field. The virtuous actions of speech should be learned like the mantras of a sage. The virtuous actions of the mind should be learned like a warrior arranging a battle. Do not despise even small virtues. Do not be timid in the face of great virtues. The ten virtuous actions of body, speech, and mind should be learned like a wheel of fire without interruption. Dharma practice is to dispel obstacles. Accumulating merit is to gain benefit and fame. Practice is meditation. Just because a person has not abandoned the Dharma, they will not attain liberation. In general, there is no noble path without relying on hearing, contemplation, and meditation. Among them, hearing must come first. Hearing opens the eyes of ignorance. Generates the light of wisdom. Knows what to do and what not to do. Grasps the basis of oneself and others. Knows the methods of afflictions and antidotes. Engaging in practice after hearing is like feeding a baby elephant with lion's milk.
