is the companion of clarity. Remembering the instructions is the companion of generating antidotes. Recollecting the aspects is the companion of eliminating unfavorable factors. Holding aspects with the mind is to mentally engage with many different aspects. Sometimes one mentally engages with pleasant aspects, sometimes one mentally engages with unpleasant aspects, and sometimes one mentally engages with neutral objects. Seeking the ordinary state is when, if awareness sinks, one temporarily abandons the object of meditation and leaves the mind in an ordinary state. Remembering to engage is when, at the time of mental sinking, one should perform three types of distraction: physical distraction, adjusting the posture of the limbs; verbal distraction, reciting verses of profound meaning; mental distraction, directing the mind outward through the sense gates. In this way, the seven key points can subdue sinking. The methods for pacifying agitation are: subsequent cutting, seeking the limit of the object, urging with a whip, leading onto the path, refuting the agent, recognizing the nature, and transforming the object. The first, subsequent cutting, has three: subsequent cutting of number, subsequent cutting of object, and subsequent cutting of time. The first is to ascertain the number of mental distractions with the mind. The second is to ascertain the object of the mind to which one is distracted. The third is to examine the three times and ascertain with the mind to which time one is distracted. The second, seeking the limit, has three: seeking the limit of the object, seeking the limit of thought, and seeking the limit of the antidote. The first is that since the wisdom that distinguishes individual objects does not find the object, the distraction to that object-possessor is naturally pacified. The second is that since the thought of the one who is distracted is not found, agitation is naturally pacified. Seeking the limit of the antidote is to examine the antidote itself, thereby pacifying agitation. Thus, since the object to which one is distracted, the thought that distracts, and the antidote that examines the antidote are not found, agitation is pacified. Urging with a whip is to move the object to which one is distracted with the earlier awareness, causing it to engage in distraction. There are three types: urging with a physical whip, urging with a verbal whip, and urging with a mental whip. The first is to exhaust the force of agitation by moving the limbs of the body, etc. Urging with a verbal whip is...

Thus, By reciting verses spoken by the Tathagata, etc., the force of agitation is exhausted. Urging with the whip of the mind: By causing the mind to wander from the object to which it has wandered to another object, the force of agitation is exhausted. Taking it as the path: It is transforming agitation into a continuum of samadhi. There are three types: Taking it as the path by entering into a very clear object; Taking it as the path by individually examining self-arising thoughts; Taking it as the path by examining the nature of the antidote. Negating the agent: It is negating the thoughts that cause the mind to wander with the subsequent knowledge of the antidote. There are three types: Negating on the object of appearance; Negating on the mind that possesses the object; Negating on both. Identifying the nature: It is showing the nature of the mind that wanders. There are three types: Showing the nature of appearance as impermanent, showing the nature of meaning as non-elaborate, and showing the arising of the mind of habit. Transforming the object: It is transforming the object to which it has previously wandered onto another. There are three types: If it is not clear, then transform it onto an external object; If it is clear, then transform it onto an internal object; If the mind abides, then transform it so that it does not exceed a complete session. Establishing the reality of equipoise has two aspects: the general way of meditation and the way of meditation for each individual. The first has three aspects: meditating on appearance as illusion-like, meditating on emptiness as naturally pure, and meditating on the union of appearance and emptiness. The first is: meditating on dependent arising as appearing but without inherent existence; the second is: meditating on emptiness itself as being empty of inherent existence, emptiness does not abide in one extreme, if not examined it appears as various, if there is no basis of phenomena, then the emptiness that depends on it will not exist either. The third is: meditating on both appearance and emptiness as being of one taste, empty of inherent existence. The second, the way of meditation for each individual, has three aspects: the way of meditation for those with dull faculties, the way of meditation for those with medium faculties, and the way of meditation for those with sharp faculties. The first has two aspects: identifying thoughts and the way of learning on the object. The first is: after a thought arises, the appearance of any object appears.
