Physical illnesses and suffering will arise. To destroy these demons, how should one practice the four common preliminaries? There are two ways: the preliminary practices and the main practice. First, one must gradually learn starting from death and impermanence, because there is no jumping ahead in the Buddha's teachings. Climbing upwards is a false dharma, everything that does not conform to the lineage is a false dharma, everything that does not become an antidote to afflictions is a false dharma, everything that does not become a true dharma is a false dharma. Even when born, one must be born step by step; even when practicing, one must practice step by step. Because one cannot abandon subtle afflictions from the beginning, one must abandon them from the coarse stages. To reach the ultimate goal, one must first cut off the root. So, what is the coarse thing to be abandoned first? It is the thought that one will not die, this alone is coarse, and this alone is harmful to the practice of the path. Relying on the thought of not dying, samsara arises. When a lama guides a student, like an unwise mother feeding a small child, one must first teach from the recollection of death. The mother gradually increases the amount of food according to the child's stomach condition. If one feeds too much from the beginning, the child's stomach will turn over and die. Similarly, the lama must gradually teach the Dharma to the student. If one teaches profound and vast teachings from the beginning, wrong views will arise and one will go astray. First, meditate on death and impermanence. If this genuine experience arises in the mind, then the sound of emptiness will naturally arise, so this is very important at first. The Sutra also says, "The most excellent of all cognitions is impermanence, the most excellent of all traces is the trace of an ox, the most excellent of all tastes is milk, the most excellent of all farming is autumn harvest." The great scholar Shantideva also said that after the four preliminaries of the path of preparation have arisen, one meditates on impermanence. If one wants to meditate on death and impermanence, then all Indians meditate facing south, and it is said that they meditate in the cemetery. The meaning of meditating facing south is that there are thirty-six thousand cities in India, and when people die there, when they are carried out from the south gate, they are placed on four pieces of wood, and carried by four people.

Carrying it on the shoulder, while drumming and sending it on the street, cultivate impermanence. By cultivating impermanence, aversion arises towards samsara. I am also of such a nature, not exceeding such a nature. I am also of the nature of death, possessing the characteristics of death, not exceeding the nature of death. Certainly, thinking that I will die like this, meditate by eliminating attachment and aversion. Also, by analyzing those corpses, I will certainly die like this. There is no difference between this corpse and my body. Thus, raising the head, meditate. There are also types of corpses. There is one type of complete corpse that has just been sent to the cemetery. There is one type of swollen corpse that is about one or two days old. There is one type of corpse whose intestines have been dug out by birds and dogs, etc. There is one type of bones and tendons connected vertically and horizontally. There is one type of bones scattered in all directions. There are also those that have become like the color of conch shells after many years. There is also one type that is greenish-blue like the color of bird droppings. There is also one type that is full of insects and has erect ears. All places are covered with pus and blood, intestines, etc., and just seeing it causes aversion. All the hairs are black and dense like branches of trees, and owls and foxes, etc., make unpleasant sounds, which further increases aversion. Comparing those with one's own body, I am also of such a nature, possessing such characteristics, certainly thinking that I will die like this and cultivate, thereby eliminating attachment and aversion. The necessity of cultivating impermanence: If even the thought that I will also go like this does not arise even a little bit, there is no difference between a fox going to the cemetery. When a fox goes to the cemetery, apart from thinking about what there is to eat, the thought that I will also go like this will not arise. Like this, if you cultivate but still cannot remember it in your heart, then your own mind is momentary and impermanent. Just coming here until now, you have been getting closer and closer to the direction of death. Without stopping for even a moment, this consciousness, from the very beginning of entering the mother's womb, is approaching the direction of death. If we consider it from the perspective of fast and slow, it is like four people shooting arrows back to back. If it is someone with ability, those arrows will not fall to the ground.
