How fast is it if measured by foot? Even faster than that are the hungry ghosts walking on the ground. Even faster than that are the hungry ghosts walking in the sky. Even faster than that are the gods of the sun and moon. Even faster than that is life. Even so, if it cannot enter the mind, it is impermanent in the time it takes for a powerful person to shoot an arrow. It is impermanent in the time it takes for Vajrapani to reach the bottom of the ocean from the top of Mount Meru. It is impermanent in the time it takes for water to flow from a steep cliff. It is impermanent in the time it takes for a stream of rain to fall from the sky. It is impermanent in the time it takes for a stick raised in the sky to fall to the ground. It is impermanent in the time it takes to cut off a stream and dig a pond. Without adding from elsewhere, just passing one or two days, one gets closer and closer to death. Suddenly, it is impermanent. Being hit by a waterfall, or being swept away by water, or being caught in a landslide, or being struck by a weapon, it is impermanent in that short time, sitting there dimly, suddenly turning gray, hair suddenly turning white, it is impermanent in that short time. In short, there is nothing that is not a cause of death. There are eighty-four thousand kinds of obstacles, attacking the body and life at all times and in all situations. Four hundred and four diseases also harm. The four great elements outside also become causes of death. Falling off a cliff and dying. Being swept away by water and dying. Being burned by fire and dying. Food is the cause of survival, but one dies for the sake of obtaining food. Merchants die on the road of commerce. Robbers die on the road of robbery. Thieves die on the road of theft. Dying from flooding. Dying from starvation. Clothes are the cause of survival, but one dies for the sake of obtaining clothes. Dying from tripping. Dying from being squeezed. Oneself is the cause of survival, but oneself also becomes the cause of death. Dying from a fish bone stuck in the throat. Dying from being struck by a weapon. Dying from eating poison, etc. Dying from being crushed. Thus, there is nothing that is not a cause of death. There is no sentient being that does not die. There is no sentient being that does not die. There is no way to not die. Birth is the cause, and death is the result. The sages with clairvoyance see that there is no place where one can escape death. The sentient beings of the world, even if they gather together, will eventually separate, and there is no way to prolong it even for a moment. Quickly can prevent (death).

There is no way. For exhausted life, there is no medicine to prevent it, no mantra to prevent it. By meditating on death in this way, one realizes that nothing in this world is meaningful. If a short thought arises slightly, it is considered to have produced a little. This is absolutely necessary to stimulate renunciation. Therefore, one should practice before each meditation session. To practice the parts that are in harmony with renunciation, there are four aspects: First is the instruction on practicing the heat sign. First, take refuge in the Three Jewels. Then, for the benefit of others, cultivate the mind of wanting to attain complete enlightenment. Sit in the lotus position, with hands in the meditation mudra. The body should not rely on anything. As before, all phenomena are like the analogy of the moon in water, like the analogy of a dream, like the analogy of an echo, like the analogy of an image, like the analogy of a mirage, like the analogy of a city of gandharvas, like the analogy of a rainbow. From the time of appearance, determine that they are without inherent existence through the wisdom of hearing and thinking. With samadhi, fix the mind without distraction on the object, and with wisdom know that it is without inherent existence. Like this, meditate in the way of uniting shamatha and vipashyana. If, during meditation, the mind falls into dullness, so that the object is not clear, one should take methods to pacify dullness. There are seven methods: changing the support, indicating external objects, opening up space, generating mindfulness, seizing the throne of the mind, finding an ordinary place, and indicating entry. The first is, if one becomes dull during meditation, adjust the support of meditation—body, speech, and mind—better than before, and then change to another place. Indicating external objects is, when dull, open the eyes and look at external objects such as forms, and then look with mindfulness of clarity. First generate the thought of adjusting dullness, and then look. Continue to look constantly until the dullness has not subsided. The third, opening up space, is a method of clarifying the mind by opening up the space of the meditation place. Opening up the space of the mind is to make the appearance of the object in the mind very clear. Opening up the space of the body is to adjust the posture of the body. Generating mindfulness is, when dull, to keep mindfulness in the mind, by remembering the object.
