Disease increases and death occurs. Hearing increases, one desires to become wise. The desire to become wise increases, leading to arrogance. Arrogance increases, leading to disease. Disease increases and death occurs. Wisdom increases, leading to merit. Merit increases, leading to arrogance. Arrogance increases, leading to disease. Disease increases and death occurs. Meditation increases, leading to self-grasping. Self-grasping increases, leading to desire. Desire increases, leading to disease. Disease increases and death occurs. Conduct increases, leading to clairvoyance. Clairvoyance increases, leading to direct perception. Direct perception increases, leading to disease. Disease increases and death occurs. Austerity increases, leading to the desire for goodness. The desire for goodness increases, leading to hypocrisy. Hypocrisy increases, leading to disease. Disease increases and death occurs. Practice increases, leading to the desire for happiness. The desire for happiness increases, leading to grasping at subject and object. Grasping at subject and object increases, leading to disease. Disease increases and death occurs. What is the cause of these? It is because fatigue arises from attachment. It is because the body, speech, and mind are weary and tired on the path of practice. Because wisdom does not reach the essence, disease will arise. For example, intermittent pain, displeasure, inability to use wisdom as an antidote, unwillingness to sit on a cushion, headache, back pain, discomfort in the upper and lower parts of the body, mental confusion, anger, and finally, urinary retention, etc., will occur. At that time, three contradictions will arise: contradiction in cause. Due to the attachment to samsara, even though one is tormented by disease, one is unwilling to give up wealth and possessions. Contradiction in nature. For virtuous activities, etc., all things are done with a purpose, and accomplished with attachment and clinging, therefore bound by attachment. Contradiction in object, because one does not know the methods to eliminate disease and evil spirits, and speculates wildly, even though red copper exists within oneself, it must be extracted from miners. Because one does not know the antidote to eliminate disease and evil spirits oneself, one must rely on the kindness of diviners and doctors, etc. Attachment and fatigue gather in the body, causing heat in the upper body, cold in the lower body, and pain in the liver and gallbladder in the middle. Treating the upper body causes discomfort in the lower body, and treating the lower body causes discomfort in the upper body. It becomes like the bow of a bad archer. The bad omens of the world are spoken about the body, saying, "I have practiced Dharma all my life, but I have contracted such a disease, so the Dharma is not true. Now go to divination, seek medicine, and get treatment." And saying, "This inauspicious body must now be purified." Then offerings are made. Because the mind is filled with the faults of attachment, fatigue, and weariness, one thinks, "What is the use of this?" Thus, hope and doubt arise.

Many conceptual thoughts arise. Because the appearance of hope is not cut off, there is harm from spirits. Because the appearance of delusion is not cut off, many after-effects of wrong thoughts arise. Now, is it that the gods are displeased? Or is it harm from spirits? Or are the Dharma protectors displeased? Would it be beneficial to offer a torma (Skt., offering cake)? Such thoughts arise. If one considers how to cure the illness, then neither a sorceress nor a doctor, etc., can cure it. Then how is it cured? It must be cured by the correct view of realizing emptiness. Because the cause of illness is fatigue, and fatigue is generated by attachment, therefore, the wisdom of realizing emptiness is needed as the antidote to clinging to reality. Moreover, if one clings to the opposing side as something to be abandoned, and clings to the antidote as something to be accepted, one will fall into the extreme of bad views. If one acts with attachment to the duality of rejection and acceptance, one will fall into the extreme of bad conduct. If one meditates from the perspective of hope and fear, one will fall into the extreme of bad meditation. Therefore, the wisdom of realizing emptiness cuts off the attachment of the view to things and characteristics, and the concentration of realizing emptiness extracts the thorn of conceptual thought from meditation. Whatever virtuous deeds, etc., one does, one realizes that there is no object of focus and no place to abide, and thus the knot of attachment to action as something to be done is untied. This is the instruction for destroying attachment from the outside. It is the method for quickly crossing the long path of samsara. It is the instruction for cutting off the six realms of beings with one wisdom. One should abide in equipoise on the wisdom of realizing emptiness—the Perfection of Wisdom (prajñāpāramitā, Sanskrit: प्रज्ञापारमिता, prajñāpāramitā, perfection of wisdom). Moreover, one should meditate on the path, and without turning into a three-part object of focus, one must learn the way of having no object of focus. As it is said in the Perfection of Wisdom Sutra: For example, if some people do not remove the clay and fill a pot with water, because it is fragile, it will quickly break. If one removes the clay and fills the pot with water, there will be no fear of breaking, and one will return home in comfort. Similarly, even if a bodhisattva's (bodhisattva, Sanskrit: बोधिसत्त्व, bodhisattva, being for enlightenment) faith increases, if wisdom declines, one will quickly become unruly. If faith completely grasps wisdom, then one will far surpass the second ground and attain supreme enlightenment (bodhi, Sanskrit: बोधि, bodhi, enlightenment). For example, a poorly repaired boat in the ocean, will be destroyed along with its wealth and merchants. If that boat is well repaired and equipped, then it will not be destroyed and will reach the shore along with its wealth.
