Beings are very important, especially for those who enter the Dharma gate. The initial action of taking refuge is very important. Without it, no matter how much effort is put into body, speech, and mind, there is no cause to enter the correct path. Therefore, the basis of all trainings is also taking refuge. The support of all vows is also taking refuge. The foundation of all virtuous conduct is also taking refuge. Increasing merit, eliminating sins, and protecting from the lower realms are impossible without taking refuge. Therefore, one should take refuge when first entering the Dharma gate. By doing so, one enters the ranks of Buddhists. One should also take refuge when receiving training. This lays the foundation for vows. One should also take refuge when generating Bodhicitta. This trains the Mahayana path. One should also take refuge when receiving empowerment. This ripens the ordinary continuum. One should also take refuge when engaging in virtuous activities. This removes obstacles on the path. Taking refuge at any time brings immeasurable benefits. By doing so, one enters the protection of the Three Jewels. The two obscurations are cleared, and the wisdom of the antidote increases, thus entering the protection of the Buddha Jewel. With the pacification of afflictions and grasping, one enters the protection of the Dharma Jewel. Driven by compassion, one benefits those who have not realized the true meaning through various methods and radiates the light of the true Dharma, thus entering the protection of the guide, the unsurpassed Sangha Jewel. These are the ways to practice taking refuge in the relative truth, and in the ultimate truth, it should be sealed with the wisdom of realizing non-attachment. The way to practice non-attachment and tireless diligence is: In general, all faults, especially physical illnesses and sufferings, and discomfort, etc., arise from attachment to manifest phenomena. Moreover, ordinary worldly people are attached to the five aggregates, attached to the six elements, attached to desire and hatred, attached to enemies and friends, and attached to the consciousness of dualistic perception. Those who enter the Dharma are attached to the object of refuge, the Three Jewels, attached to the Yidam deity, attached to moral discipline, attached to the general aspect of views, attached to the thoughts to be abandoned, attached to the antidote to be abandoned, attached to the visualized image of the deity, attached to the bliss of channels and winds.

Attachment to children, attachment to compassionate kindness, attachment to whispered instructions, attachment to one's own sect, attachment to small portions of what is heard. Due to such attachments, faults and fatigue of body, speech, and mind arise, from which physical illnesses and sufferings, etc., arise. Due to the cause of attachment, the body becomes weary, and the actions of the body cannot be used for virtuous deeds. Speech becomes weary, so one does not take refuge, etc. The mind becomes weary, so one only follows inverted thoughts. Relying on these, three kinds of misconduct arise: the misconduct of the body is to show bad behavior; the misconduct of speech is to fall into gossip and topics of conversation; the misconduct of the mind is to be controlled by afflictions. One does not know the remedies that are beneficial for illness, and loses the teachings of refuge. The worldly misconduct is to fight each other, and to deviate from the Buddha's teachings. One worships worldly deities, and deviates from the Dharma's teachings. One harms sentient beings, and deviates from the Sangha's teachings. Deviates, associates with inverted friends. Having become like that, worldly misconduct will be exposed by others. When the practitioner himself is on the verge of life and death, he has to rely on divination and medicine. Having become like that, he will be slandered as being no different from a black person. Furthermore, as mentioned before, because the continuum of attachment has not severed the thoughts of desire and hatred, he again takes the form of a practitioner, striving only for the benefit of this life. The teachers emphasize worldly morality and engage in malicious debates. All the meditators become military officers. Emphasizing worldly morality, they make long-term plans. Even worldly people are ashamed of such practitioners. They do not speak to their faces, but they gossip behind their backs. They seek offerings from elsewhere. In the end, like a millstone, they become smaller and smaller. They become objects of contempt for the wise. When illness occurs temporarily, because they do not know the true cause of the illness, they will say that I have this kind of illness, so the Dharma is not true, and therefore they will abandon the Dharma. At that time, they will not be able to escape from the control of the demon. Also, some practitioners appear to be good practitioners in front of others, pretending to be disciplined and liberated. Thinking that if they do not do so, these people will not trust me, and if they do not trust me, there will be no offerings and services, etc., therefore they engage in hearing and thinking.
