There are three faults of expression: not showing the counter-example, not showing the subsequent example, and showing the example incorrectly. For example: 'The opponent is desirous because he speaks,' which is like 'not as desired'; 'Sound is impermanent because it is produced, like a pot'; and when proving 'sound produced is impermanent,' it is like saying 'sound is produced, therefore it is impermanent, like a pot.' Second, there are two types of dissimilar examples: valid and seemingly valid. Their definitions, in order, are: an example that is a truly established basis for counter-pervasion and is free from the three faults; and an example that is taken as a truly established basis for counter-pervasion but possesses any of the three faults. Classification: The first is divided into two: examples that are established first and examples that are later recalled. The second is divided into three: faults in meaning, faults in understanding, and faults in expression. The first has three faults in meaning: the dharma, the sign, and both not being counter-pervasive. For example: 'Sound is permanent because it is not corporeal,' with dissimilar examples like atoms, action, and space. The second has three faults in understanding: doubting the absence of the dharma, the absence of the sign, and the absence of both. For example: 'Serkya is not omniscient because he does not know the scriptures on astrology,' with dissimilar examples like the Jains' leader and Longrim; 'Serkya does not possess graspable words because he is desirous,' with dissimilar examples like the sage Gautama and Yidlekye, as stated by the Brahmins; and 'Serkya is not without desire because he possesses all supporters,' with dissimilar examples like the Jains' leader and Longri. The third has three faults in expression: not being counter-pervasive, not showing counter-pervasion, and showing counter-pervasion in a reversed manner. For example: 'Thubpa is not without desire because he speaks,' with a dissimilar example like a piece of stone, as stated by the Charvakas; 'Sound is impermanent because it is produced,' with a dissimilar example like space; and when proving 'sound produced is impermanent,' it is like saying 'if it is not produced, then it is permanent, like space.' These are the eighteen seemingly valid examples. Second, for inference for others, the definition is: a statement with two parts, the establishing statement, which shows the three modes of the sign seen by one's own pramana ( प्रमाण , pramāṇa, means of knowledge) to the person who needs to be taught. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The subject, object, and nature of speech are to be understood in three ways. The first is the debater (meaning: the person who debates on tenets). Debaters are divided into three types: the former debater, the latter debater, and the witness. Their definitions are, in order: the individual who accepts the former view; the individual who accepts the latter view; and the individual who commits to distinguishing the victory or defeat of the debaters. The first, the former debater, is further divided into the correct former debater and the seemingly correct former debater. Their definitions are, in order: the individual who is able to destroy the opponent's confidence by presenting the former view; and the individual who is not able to do so. The second, the latter debater, is further divided into the correct latter debater and the seemingly correct latter debater. Their definitions are, in order: the individual who is able to destroy the former debater's confidence by accepting the latter view and stating a correct refutation; and the individual who accepts the latter view but is not able to destroy the former debater's confidence. The third, the witness, is further divided into the correct witness and the seemingly correct witness. Their definitions are, in order: the individual who is able to understand the victory or defeat of the debaters and convey this information; and the individual who considers themselves a witness but is not able to distinguish the victory or defeat of the debaters. The correct witness is divided into: the recounting witness, the distinguishing witness, and the punishing witness. The second is the nature of speech, which is divided into argumentation and refutation. The first, argumentation, is further divided into correct argumentation that conforms to reason and correct argumentation that does not conform to reason. Their definitions are, in order: the correct argumentation that directly states the reason and pervasion in support of the thesis, and implies the counter-pervasion; and the correct argumentation that directly states the reason and counter-pervasion in support of the thesis, and implies the pervasion. For example, in order: 'Whatever is made is impermanent, like a pot; sound is also made.' And, 'Whatever is permanent is not made, like unmade space; sound is made.' The second, refutation, is further divided into correct refutation and seemingly correct refutation. Their definitions are, in order: the refutation that cannot be refuted; and the refutation that can be refuted. The first is further divided into: three types of result refutation, nature refutation, and non-apprehension refutation; three types of refutation involving faults of meaning, faults of intelligence, and faults of speech; three types of refutation involving the admission of three turns, two turns, and one turn, or divided into two types of refutation: those that present an argument and those that do not. The definitions of the latter two are, in order: if a correct refutation is refuted in meaning, then it must possess three characteristics.
