Teachings of Master Tsamongba Sonam Sengge 2-3 The Essence of Logic: A Precious Garland Homage to all Buddhas and Bodhisattvas! May the blazing rays of right view, utterly destroy the darkness of wrong views. May the sunlight of Dignāga and Dharmakīrti's treatises, flourish together with the teachings of the Sage (Shakyamuni Buddha)! For the benefit of those intelligent seekers who aspire to embark on the path of correct reasoning and advance towards the city of liberation (Nirvana) and omniscience (Sarvajñā), I will briefly explain the essence of logical treatises. Firstly, the object to be ascertained—the knowable (Śejya)—has two aspects: characteristic (Lakṣaṇa) and classification (Vibhāga). The characteristic is that which can be an object of mind. Synonymous and coextensive with it are: object, the measurable, selflessness (Anātman), basis (Āśraya) established, other (Para) different, existent, and so on. The classifications of the knowable are: conditioned phenomena (Saṃskṛta) and unconditioned phenomena (Asaṃskṛta), non-entity (Abhāva) and entity (Bhāva), object (Viṣaya) and subject (Viṣayin), the expressible (Abhidheya) and the expresser (Abhidhāyaka), negation (Pratiṣedha) and affirmation (Sādhana), contradictory (Viruddha) and related (Sambandha), one (Eka) and many (Nānā), property (Dharma) and property-possessor (Dharmin), counter-entity (Vyāvṛtti) and property-characteristic (Dharmalakṣaṇa), self-characteristic (Svalakṣaṇa) and general-characteristic (Sāmānyalakṣaṇa), universal (Sāmānya) and particular (Viśeṣa), the two truths (Satya-dvaya), the three characteristics (Trilakṣaṇa), the three virtues (Kuśala), the four truths (Satya-catuṣṭaya), aggregates (Skandha), elements (Dhātu), sources (Āyatana), and so on. First Conditioned and Unconditioned Phenomena The characteristics of conditioned and unconditioned phenomena are, respectively: born from causes and conditions, and not born from causes and conditions. The classifications of unconditioned phenomena are: unconditioned space (generally, space can be divided into three types: space of apertures, decorative space, and unconditioned space), cessation through discrimination (Pratisaṃkhyā-nirodha), and cessation not through discrimination (Apratisaṃkhyā-nirodha). The characteristics are, respectively: unconditioned phenomena that are free from what is to be obscured and what obscures, which opens up the space for the arising of form (Rūpa); unconditioned phenomena that, through the wisdom of discrimination, become the share of one's own abandonment; unconditioned phenomena that obstruct the arising of conditioned phenomena, and are different from cessation through discrimination. Classifications of Entities Second, the classifications of entities are: non-entity and entity, with characteristics respectively: without function and with function. They are divided into four types from the perspective of essence, from the perspective of function, from the perspective of temporal order, and from the perspective of generating function. The first is divided into two types: matter and consciousness, with characteristics respectively: composed of particles and giving rise to experience.

From the perspective of cause and effect, it can be divided into three types: coarse and fine. The first type is divided into two types: external matter and internal matter. Their definitions are, in order: composed of external particles, and composed of internal particles. In terms of classification, the first type has five types: form, sound, smell, taste, and touch. Their definitions are, in order: the proximate cause of the arising elements, and capable of being the object of eye consciousness, and so on. In terms of classification, form has two types (or twenty types), sound has eight types, taste has six types, smell has four types, and touch has eleven types. To summarize, form is divided into two types: color and shape. Sound is divided into two types: expressive and non-expressive. Smell and taste are both divided into two types: good and bad. Touch is divided into the touch of elements as cause, and the touch of elemental changes as effect. The second type of internal matter is divided into five sense organs: eye, ear, nose, tongue, and body. Their definitions are, in order: the internal clear particles that can generate the ability to grasp the object of eye consciousness, and so on. For example: like pomegranate flowers, the awns of wheat ears, the immersion of copper needles, half-moon, the soft skin of birds, etc. The second type, classified from the perspective of cause and effect, is divided into four elements: earth, water, fire, and wind, and five types such as form produced by the elements. The definitions of the first four elements are, in order: hard and viscous, moist and liquid, hot and able to burn, light and able to move. The third type, classified from the perspective of coarse and fine, is divided into extremely small particles that make up particles and coarse particles composed of extremely small particles. The second type of wisdom classification will be explained in the chapter on objects. The second type, classified from the perspective of action and being acted upon, is divided into two types: cause and effect. Their definitions are, in order: helping it and arising accordingly, and being helped by it and arising accordingly. (The *Abhidharmakośa* says: 'Form, name, dust, end of time, kṣaṇa, extremely small dust, dust, and likewise, iron, water, rabbit, sheep and cow, sunlight dust and chaff, arising from this and likewise, finger joint is called sevenfold increase, twenty-four fingers are an elbow, four elbows are a bow, five hundred bows are a krośa, also called a monastery, eight krośas are a yojana.') In terms of classification, the first type of cause is divided into two types: from the perspective of nature and from the perspective of ability. The first type is further divided into proximate cause and co-occurring condition. Their definitions are, in order: being its cause. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
