The first is the first seeing, and the non-trusting and delusive perceptions are determined from others. The third is distinguished by way of numerical certainty, namely perception and inference (as stated in the 'Compendium on Valid Cognition': 'Perception and inference are valid cognitions'), their definitions being, respectively: a correct knowledge that is free from conceptualization and non-erroneous, and a knowledge that newly and infallibly arises from a sign possessing three characteristics in relation to its object to be measured, which is hidden. In terms of divisions, the first has three: the nature of perception, seeming perception, and the result of valid perception, which are to be understood by three. The first has four: sense perception, mental perception, self-awareness, and yogic perception. Their definitions are, respectively: sense consciousness is non-conceptual and non-erroneous; mental consciousness; the knowledge of looking inward; and the knowledge of the noble ones arising from meditation, which is non-conceptual and non-erroneous. In terms of divisions, the first has five: eye, ear, nose, tongue, and body sense perceptions. Their definitions are, respectively: the knowledge that directly arises from its own substantial cause—the eye sense faculty and form—is other-knowing, non-conceptual, and non-erroneous, etc., these words should be supplemented. The second, mental perception, is divided into five: mental perceptions apprehending form, sound, smell, taste, and touch. Their definitions are, respectively: the mental consciousness that directly arises from the immediately preceding eye sense perception, and from the specific characteristic of form as its objective condition, is mental consciousness, non-conceptual, and non-erroneous, etc., these words should be supplemented. The third, self-aware perception, is divided into two: the experiencer of mind and mental factors, or ordinary beings and noble beings. The fourth, yogic perception, is divided into three: the yogic perceptions of hearers, solitary realizers, and the Great Vehicle. Their definitions are, respectively: the knowledge arising from meditation in the continuum of a noble hearer, which is non-conceptual and non-erroneous, etc., these words should be supplemented. In terms of divisions, each one has three: the paths of seeing, meditation, and no more learning. The second, seeming perception, is defined as a mind that is deluded with respect to its own appearing object. In terms of divisions, there are two: conceptual and non-conceptual seeming perceptions. Their definitions are, respectively: a clinging mind that is deluded with respect to its own appearing object, and a non-clinging mind that arises from its own substantial cause—a defective sense faculty. In terms of divisions, the first has six, as stated in the 'Commentary on Valid Cognition': 'Delusion and conventional knowledge, and inference, arising from inference, memory and manifest desire.' The second, due to the influence of mental consciousness and sense consciousness, is divided into two. The third, the result of valid perception, is the result. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The first of the three 'pramanas' [cognitions] is: the external object is the object to be measured, the mind itself appearing as the form of the object is the pramana, and the realization of the object is the result. The second is: the apprehended aspect is the object to be measured, the apprehending aspect is the pramana, and self-awareness is the result. The third is: the external object is the object to be measured, the apprehended aspect is the pramana, and the cognition of the object that has become the nature of self-awareness is the result. The first two are the views of the Sautrantika school, and the middle one is the classification of pramana and result according to the Vijnanavada school. By the way, the classification of inference as pramana and result is: the collection of sound and impermanence is the object to be measured, the appearance of sound as the form of impermanence is the pramana, and the realization that sound is impermanent is the result. Second, inference can be divided into (as stated in Pramanavarttika: 'Inference is twofold: for oneself and for others; by means of a reason with three aspects, one sees the meaning.'): inference for oneself and inference for others. The first is further divided into two. First, the detailed classification of the entity is: inference arising from the power of things, inference from fame, and inference from belief. Their definitions are, in order: from a sign with three aspects arising from the power of things, a new and non-deceptive cognition arises about one's own object to be measured that is hidden; the cognition arising from a sign of fame with three aspects; and from a sign of belief with three aspects, a non-deceptive cognition about one's own object to be measured. Second, a detailed explanation of signs and examples. Signs and examples are divided into two types. First, the definition of a sign is the reason presented as an argument. If classified, signs can be divided into correct signs and similar signs. Their definitions are, in order: a reason with three aspects determined by the power of pramana; and a reason that is presented as a sign but lacks the three aspects. The first is further divided into three types. First, the three aspects of the definition are: property of the subject, presence in the similar class, and absence in the dissimilar class. Their definitions are, in order: a sign that is established by the power of pramana in the way it is presented on one's own faultless subject that one wants to know; something that is necessarily related to the property one wants to prove, and is determined to exist only in one's own similar class; and something that is determined to exist only in one's own dissimilar class. If classified, the first can be divided into three types: correct property of the subject, uncertain property of the subject, and contradictory property of the subject. Alternatively, the property of the subject can be divided into nine types (as the verse says: 'Property of the subject and similar class, presence and absence and both, each has two, hence there are two presences and absences.' and 'The object to be measured is made, impermanent and made, made and audible effort-born, impermanent effort-born non-touchable, these nine are also for permanent etc.'). --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
