As (stated like 'the means of establishment is measurability' etc.), to exemplify the nine types of reasons in order: Sound, the subject of debate, is permanent because it is measurable; it is impermanent because it is produced; Conch sound, the subject of debate, is produced by effort, therefore it is impermanent; it is permanent because it is produced; it is permanent because it is audible; Conch sound, the subject of debate, is permanent because it is produced by effort; it is not produced by effort, therefore it is impermanent; Conch sound, the subject of debate, is impermanent because it is produced by effort; it is permanent because it is not tangible. Among these, the first three are similar in that they function as pervasive factors in the concordant side, but there is absolutely no pervasive factor in the discordant side, these are the second and third cases. The middle three are similar in that they are completely absent in the concordant side, but in the discordant side, they either exist or do not exist, these are the second and third cases. The last three are partially similar in the concordant side, and in the discordant side, they also either exist or do not exist, these are three cases, making a total of nine. The second and third reasons are divided into two types each, based on their own purpose and the purpose of others. Secondly, the three bases of dependence are: the basis of dependence for the first reason is the subject of debate that one wishes to understand; the basis of dependence for the second reason is the similar side; the basis of dependence for the third reason is the dissimilar side. The definitions, in order, are: a certain aspect of the general subject of debate, which is taken as the standard for the property to be established; according to the method of establishment, it is in accordance with the general meaning of the property to be established; and that which is not so. The first can be divided into: valid reason, contradictory uncertain reason, and unestablished subject of debate, four types. The second and third can be divided into: the similar side and the dissimilar side, which are either conceptually designated or exist in reality, two types each. Alternatively, for the second, like the similar side of a contradictory reason, the reason is completely absent; like the similar side of a causal reason, the reason exists in one aspect; like the similar side where 'produced' is posited to establish 'sound is impermanent', the reason exists as a pervasive factor, these are three types. For the third, it can be divided into: like a stream of water that prevents cold touch on a fire, it is a non-existent dissimilar side; like a neutral touch, it is a different dissimilar side; like cold touch, it is a contradictory dissimilar side, these are three types. The two conceptually designated sides are: that which is mentally conceived and verbally expressed, like the two sides of a non-common reason, possessing the three aggregates. The two sides that exist in reality are: the contradiction of not possessing the three aggregates, that is, the similar side is in accordance with the general meaning of the property to be established; the absence of that is the dissimilar side. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Therefore, it was said by the Buddha. The definition of the dharma to be established: the dharma to be inferred that is assumed to be inferable on top of the thing that is the nature of its own dharma. If divided, there are four types, the same as the nature of the dharma. Third, the classification of the four characteristics of signs has six aspects: from the perspective of the mode of relation, from the perspective of the dharma to be established, from the perspective of the mode of establishment, from the perspective of specific purpose, from the perspective of conformity with similar things, and from the perspective of numerical certainty, there are six types. The first includes three types: the sign of the power of things entering, fame, and credibility. Their definitions are, in order: the reason that the three modes are established by the power of things; the reason that the three modes are established by fame; and the reasons that the three modes are established by credibility. If divided, the first includes two types: the establishment of meaning and the establishment of name, or three types: result, nature, and non-observation. The second includes two types: arbitrary and reasoned fame signs. For example, the thing with a rabbit (the moon) is a dharma-nature thing, which can be expressed by the word 'moon' because it exists in the realm of concept. Another example, fire is a dharma-nature thing, which can be expressed by the reason of explaining 'cooker' because it is hot and can burn. Some also consider that establishing the defined thing with a definition is a reasoned fame sign. The third includes two types: promise and self-utterance. For example, the scripture 'Those who practice Dharma will go to happiness' is a dharma-nature thing, it does not deceive its own meaning because it possesses the three special qualities of faultless words. Another example, sound is a dharma-nature thing, it is impermanent because the previous opponent of impermanence also expressed agreement with the correct meaning. The credible result sign is symbolic and can be divided into three types: result, nature, and non-observation. The second includes two types: establishing sign and negating sign. Their definitions are, in order: whichever of the three modes establishes the dharma to be established is the establishing sign; whichever negates the dharma to be established is the negating sign. If divided, the first includes two types: result and nature. The second includes two types: observable non-observation and unobservable non-observation. The third includes two types: establishing meaning and establishing name. Their definitions are, in order: for the dharma-nature thing that one wants to understand, if it can prevent the meaning of the dharma to be negated and establish the meaning of the dharma to be established, this is the sign with three modes; for one's own dharma-nature thing, if it can prevent the name of the dharma to be negated and establish that the name of the dharma to be established can be used, this is the establishment of three modes. If divided, each can be divided into three types: result, nature, and non-observation. The fourth includes two types: self-benefit and other-benefit. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
