What is the primary consciousness that arises as an entering awareness and is unlabelled and neutral? It is the basis for the accumulation of habitual tendencies. What is the primary consciousness that is obscured and neutral? It is the self-grasping that arises in relation to the ālaya-vijñāna The ālaya-vijñāna (藏文:ཀུན་གཞི་,梵文天城体:आलयविज्ञान,梵文罗马拟音:ālayavijñāna,汉语字面意思:阿赖耶识) can be divided into two parts: the vipāka (异熟) and the seeds. The vipāka (异熟) refers to the ālaya-vijñāna (藏文:ཀུན་གཞི་,梵文天城体:आलयविज्ञान,梵文罗马拟音:ālayavijñāna,汉语字面意思:阿赖耶识) when it is experiencing the results of contaminated virtuous and non-virtuous actions, while the seeds refer to the part that acts as the cause for subsequent entering awareness. Second, the classification of mental factors (according to the Abhidharmasamuccaya): there are fifty-one (according to the Vaibhāṣika school: there are ten universal mental factors, ten virtuous mental factors, six root afflictions, ten great unwholesome mental factors, ten minor afflictions, eight variable mental factors, plus views, making forty-seven. There are eight definite factors, plus views, making forty-seven. It is explained in the root verses of the Abhidharmakośa). Namely: feeling, discrimination, intention, contact, and attention, these are the five omnipresent mental factors. Aspiration, conviction, mindfulness, concentration, and wisdom, these are the five object-determining mental factors. Faith, shame, embarrassment, non-attachment, non-hatred, non-ignorance, diligence, pliancy, conscientiousness, equanimity, and non-harmfulness, these are the eleven virtuous mental factors. Attachment, anger, pride, ignorance, doubt, and views, these are the six root afflictions. Wrath, resentment, concealment, vexation, jealousy, stinginess, deceit, flattery, arrogance, harmfulness, shamelessness, lack of embarrassment, lethargy, excitement, disbelief, laziness, carelessness, forgetfulness, non-alertness, and distraction, these are the twenty secondary afflictions. Sleep, regret, investigation, and analysis, these are the four variable mental factors. Thus, there are fifty-one mental factors. Through the five similarities of object, aspect, substance, time, and basis, consciousness and mental factors are concomitant. Fourth, the classification into appearance-entry and exclusion-entry, the definitions of which are, respectively: the awareness that clearly appears the object without dividing into parts; and the way in which the knower enters the known object. Entering into sound and meaning after dividing into parts. In terms of classification, both have two types: inverted and non-inverted. Non-conceptual awareness enters through appearance, while conceptualization through sound and signs enters through exclusion. Third The Expressed and the Expresser The definitions of the expressed and the expresser are, respectively: that which is understood from a convention as its own name, and that which manifests the expressed as an object of awareness. In terms of classification, the former is divided into two types: the substantial expressed and the imputed expressed. The latter, the expresser, is divided into the inner and outer expresser. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

What are the means of expression for objects? They are the collection of names, the collection of words, and the collection of speech. The definitions of the latter three are, in order: multiple letters combined to express the essence of an object; several objects together with various characteristics expressed; and various characteristics combined with multiple bases to express. In terms of classification, first is the name, which is divided into two types: real name and imputed name. Their definitions are, in order: a name that directly conveys the meaning of an object through an initially agreed-upon convention; and a name that is similar to or related to the object, and thus is applied as a subsequent designation to the object's real name. Second is the word, which has two types of classifications. The first is category expression and aggregate expression. Their definitions are, in order: a word that expresses the specific object to which it refers; and a word that expresses the aggregate of eight basic particles to which it refers. There are four possibilities between these two. The second is words expressing dharma (quality) and dharmin (the entity possessing the quality), their definitions are, in order: a word that expresses its object by excluding other characteristics; and a word that expresses its object without excluding other characteristics. For example, 'only a cow' and 'cow'. Third is speech, which includes affirmative speech and negative speech, among others, which has been explained previously in the context of inference for the sake of others. Fourth, negation and affirmation. The definitions of negation and affirmation are, in order: established through complete exclusion by the mind and established through complete determination. In terms of classification, first, negation is divided into non-implicative negation (med dgag) and implicative negation (ma yin dgag). Their definitions are, in order: after the object of negation is excluded, no affirmative property is affirmed, it is merely an exclusion; and after the object of negation is excluded, an affirmative property needs to be indicated. Second, affirmation is divided into affirmation of real entities and affirmation of non-real entities. Fifth, contradiction and relation. The definitions of contradiction and relation are, in order: existing incompatibly; and being mutually distinct, and negating one implies negating the other. In terms of classification, first, it is divided into mutually exclusive contradiction and contradiction of co-existence. Their definitions are, in order: not like permanence and annihilation, merely a contradiction of incompatible characteristics; and existing incompatibly by becoming permanence and annihilation. In terms of classification, the former, such as done and undone, is divided into direct contradiction and indirect contradiction, such as a pot and undone. The latter is a direct contradiction like hot and cold, and an indirect contradiction like strong smoke rising and cold touch. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
