Because of the reason of benefiting sentient beings, (the body) is said to exist as a basis. If it is said that without eyes and other senses, consciousness will not arise, so consciousness arises from the senses, then: The eyes and other senses of ordinary beings, as the subject, should arise from consciousness, because they do not arise without consciousness as a cause. If you admit that, then the senses and consciousness, as the subject, should be causes of each other in this life, because you two help each other. If you admit it, then therefore, after death, you two should also be causes of each other. If it is said that the body of earth, water, fire, and wind is the direct cause of consciousness, then: The body, as the subject, should not produce sequential consciousness from you, because you are not a sequential constant. If it is said that sequential consciousness arises depending on conditions, then: Sequential consciousness should not arise sequentially depending on conditions, because the difference of conditions is not something that can be made, because it is a constant. If it is said that depending on the previous sequential consciousness, subsequent sequential consciousness arises from the body, then: The body as the subject should also clearly appear to be sequential. If you admit it, then: Knowable things, as the subject, at all times, that is, after death, should also see the body and consciousness, the previous previous is the cause of the subsequent subsequent, because when alive, each moment of the body and consciousness is the cause of each subsequent moment that did not exist before. The consciousness of an ordinary person at the time of death, as the subject, does not produce subsequent consciousness, because it is the mind at the time of death. If it is like the mind of an Arhat at the time of death, then: The newly born mind at the time of death, as the subject, that reason for establishment is not correct, because what contradiction is there in you (the mind at the time of death) connecting with other subsequent minds? Because there is no contradiction. Knowable things, as the subject, whatever the mind of an Arhat at the time of death is, it should not be considered as an example of the same kind that establishes that the mind of an ordinary person at the time of death does not connect with subsequent consciousness, because the mind of an Arhat has not been established by valid cognition. Because that is recognized in your own tenets. If you say, give an example, then, the Buddhist tenets or scriptures, as the subject, should they be followed with conceptualization, or should they not be followed? They should not be followed, because they have meanings that have not been established by valid cognition. If it is said that the mind of an Arhat at the time of death does not produce subsequent consciousness, because it is separated from the cause of producing consciousness, then, being separated from the cause of producing subsequent consciousness, as the subject, why not say here that the mind of an ordinary person at the time of death not producing subsequent consciousness is a correct reason? --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

It is absolutely correct. The death consciousness of an Arhat (Dgra bcom, one who has overcome enemies) is a valid sign, for the same reason. If mind arises directly from the body, does it arise from a body with sense faculties or one without? If the former, does it arise from each sense faculty individually or from a collection? If from each individually, then conceptual mind, by its nature, will clearly apprehend objects, because it is another consciousness arising from the eye faculty. Just like the consciousness of the eye. Apply this to other sense faculties as well. Ashes, by their nature, are not another consciousness arising directly from the eye faculty with sense faculties, because they do not apprehend in that way. If it arises from a collection of sense faculties, then the five sense faculties, by their nature, your collection does not directly give rise to mind, because each has a different capacity to generate its own individual result—sense consciousness. If it arises from a body without sense faculties, then hair, nails, etc., by their nature, you do not directly give rise to mind, because you yourselves are without mind, and body and mind would not coexist, because they are not the immediate cause and that which possesses the immediate cause. If someone says: The body and mind of an ordinary being, by their nature, even if not so, can coexist, because there is a karmic force that propels them to coexist by propelling them to coexist, just like the five sense faculties, just like the shape and taste of brown sugar, just like life. If someone says: Mind changes following the changes of the body, then knowable things, by their nature, that is not universally true, because in fact, mind's changes are seen even through being in an object, for example, fainting from seeing spilled blood. If the body is the immediate cause of mind, then the body, by its nature, you help mind by existing beforehand, and always follow mind, that is, arise, because you are the immediate cause of mind. The sign is clearly admitted. It is pervasive, because if it is the immediate cause of the result, then the result exists beforehand. 'When this exists, this arises' is the seventh, and 'because that arises, this arises' is the cause existing beforehand. Therefore, the body, by its nature, at some times, you are helpful to the continuum of mind, even if that is the case, just because you cease, mind does not cease, because mind exists even in the formless realm. Just like in the case of a clay pot, even if fire is helpful, but just because the fire ceases, the clay pot does not necessarily cease. And so on, like melting gold. Furthermore, mind, conceptual mind, by its nature, as long as the body exists, you do not cease. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
