A Clear Commentary on Chapter Two of the Teachings of Master Tsamongpa Sonam Tsongbo JTSZ3: Explaining the Commemorative Verses of the Pramana Sutra by Distinguishing Between the Path and Non-Path. A Clear Commentary on Chapter Two Svasti! To the teacher, the Sugata (bde gshegs, सुगत, sugata, gone to bliss), and the protector who leads those who practice their own heart's experience and follow the teachings without straying from the path to liberation, I bow down. Secondly, explaining how to become a pramana ( प्रमाण, pramāṇa, valid cognition). This includes two aspects: the reasons for praising pramana and the necessity of doing so. The reasons for praising pramana. First, there are two parts: explaining the verses in order, establishing pramana from the nature sign; and then explaining in reverse order, establishing pramana from the result sign. Explaining the verses in order, establishing pramana from the nature sign. First, there are six aspects: pramana, becoming, benefiting, teacher, Sugata, protector. Explaining pramana. First, there are two aspects: the general definition of pramana, and from that, proving that the Buddha is pramana. The general definition of pramana. First, there are two parts: non-deception and revealing the unknown. Non-deception as a definition. First, explaining: 'Having become pramana, intending to benefit beings, teacher, Sugata, protector, I prostrate to you.' Having become pramana, that is, being born as pramana, through perfect intention and action, intending to benefit beings, as a teacher, perfecting the two benefits, becoming the Sugata and protector, arising through perfect cause and effect, I prostrate to you. Why is it called pramana? Because it is similar to worldly pramana. Then, what is the definition or essence of pramana? It is the correct cognition that, as it measures, does not deceive the individual regarding the object of measurement. For example, non-confusion and non-error can be considered examples of pramana. Now explaining non-deception: worldly pramana, as such, does not deceive its object of measurement, because it abides in being able to perform its function as the thing it measures, so the individual is able to obtain the object of measurement. Therefore, non-deception is the cause of non-deception, so it is called non-deception. Then, would sound become non-pramana, because it does not have non-deception? If so, then the statement 'This is a pot,' without the five limitations, from the mouth of the speaker, causes the image of the pot to arise in the mind of the listener Lhasbyin, like a concept, this is a sound. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

It has the characteristic of being unfailing. Because it is a valid means of showing the object of desire to be entered. To explain this, such a sound, as a subject of debate, refers to the speaker himself, that is, the object one wants to express, the various aspects of the pot clearly appear, and there is a mind that can recognize it, which is proven to be a valid means, that is, it becomes the reason, because it has the three modes of establishment. If one wants the mind that understands the meaning to arise from the sound, then the sound of this pot, as a subject of debate, on some basis, is not a correct reason for proving the pot, because it is not the cause of the meaning of the pot, that is, it is not related to it. If infallibility is the characteristic of a valid means, then the conventional mind that arises following direct perception will also become a valid means. If so, then the conventional mind that arises following the direct perception of the pot, as a subject of debate, although it is not deceptive, is not considered a valid means, because it grasps by adding the meaning that has not been lost on the basis of what the previous valid means has already grasped. If it is to be a valid means, it must be infallible knowledge, then aren't the combination of the senses, objects, self, and mind valid means? If you ask this, then a person, as a subject of debate, if it is a valid means, it must be the mind itself, because the valid means is the main cause for engaging in and refraining from things to be taken and rejected. Just like the previous object to be proven, because the various aspects of the object are different, the mind's understanding of the meaning also becomes different. The reason is that if the former exists, then the latter exists, because the mind itself appears as the various aspects of form, so it is considered to be understanding form, etc. How is it established as a valid means through infallibility? For a distant object, although it is actually fire, but in cognition, there is doubt about whether it is fire or not, for the direct perception of grasping a red object, as a subject of debate, from the self-awareness direct perception of one's own experience, knowing one's own nature, this part is cognition, that is, it is actually certain, because it is a valid means. From which valid means is this determined? As a subject of debate, even if it cannot be determined from one's own experience, there is a factor that determines it as a valid means, because from the subsequent knowledge of the object that has the ability to function, it can be determined as a valid means. If one understands it as a valid means from the name, then the treatise that shows its characteristics is meaningless. The treatise that shows its characteristics, as a subject of debate, even if it is understood from the name, is not meaningless, because it can dispel the confusion about the distinction between whether it is a valid means or not. (Verse) The unknown meaning is shown with clear characteristics. The second point is that the knowable, as a subject of debate, establishing infallibility as part of the characteristic, there is no fault of conventional knowledge, etc., becoming a valid means, because it newly and clearly reveals the meaning that was previously unknown by the valid means. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
