Like fire arising from matter. If it were not so, then an anthill would also be an effect, because it could be inferred that it was made by a potter. Because the potter makes various forms of clay, such as pots, and the anthill is similar to the forms of clay pots. If shape is taken as a sign, then criticizing the sign from the difference in shape is like refuting with the same result. The generality of the effect, i.e., 'made,' is an effect. It is a correct sign for proving the impermanence of sound, because it possesses pervasiveness and concomitance. If this is the case, then the sound and the vase themselves, which are related to 'made,' are different. If the 'made' of the two is distinguished, then the 'made' of sound has no concomitance with the vase. The 'made' of the vase does not exist in sound, therefore, like criticizing that the example and sign are not established, Lashin's statement is also refuting with the same result. Because in taking 'made' as a correct sign for proving the impermanence of sound, criticizing from the difference in 'made,' thinking that 'made' is not a correct sign for proving sound, is a seemingly refuting statement. If merely the similarity of shape is taken as a sign, then merely the kind of shape, such as the shape of a palace, etc., could be inferred to be made by a person. The generality of sound comes from what is seen. The known sound of shape should not be a reason for you to prove that the shape of mountains, etc., is made by a person, because there is no pervasiveness proving it. For example, like 'language and directions, etc., have horns, because there is the sound of a cow.' If it is not a sound proving meaning from meaning, then all knowable things should enable all people to achieve all desires, because merely the expressing sound can achieve the expressed meaning. Pervasiveness exists. Shapes, etc., are sounds, the meaning that you can express is not non-existent, because it exists merely under the control of the intention to express. Merely the establishment of sound does not guarantee the realization of meaning, which shows that this is an examination. If so, then the Serkyapa says: 'Intelligence is happy, because it is not without mind, and is impermanent and subject to arising and ceasing.' This is an examination. The 'etc.' mentioned above refers to the owl party thinking that trees are sentient beings, because they die when peeled. This is an examination. Then, those two signs should not be correct signs for proving the target, because both opponents think that your two names are within the category of effects.

Although they may agree in appearance, they may not agree in meaning. If the essence of a thing is not established on the subject that is the subject of the sign, then this is a form or nature of non-establishment. For example, if 'made' is established as a sign on sound, even if some differences of 'made' are not established, this does not harm 'made' from becoming a sign to establish that sound is impermanent. Because even if 'made' that relies on the nature of space (i.e., 'made' that is identical to space) is not established on sound, 'made' can still serve as a sign to establish that sound is impermanent. The example is the same. If the meaning is established for something but the name is not, what will happen? If the name of the sign, for both the proponent and opponent, does not agree in appearance on the subject, but the thing itself (the meaning) agrees in appearance, then what is to be established can be established. For example, to the Uluka school, Buddhists say: 'The atoms of earth, water, fire, and wind are the subject, are impermanent, because they have a body, like a pot.' Although Buddhists do not acknowledge that the possessor of tactile sensation has a body, for the Vaisheshika school, not all quantities of matter have a body; the Vaisheshikas consider atoms to have a body, while Buddhists do not. Therefore, even if the name 'having a body' is not known to the Vaisheshikas for atoms, its meaning is established, because the Vaisheshikas also acknowledge that atoms have tactile sensation, so it can serve as a sign. 'Etc.' includes those with obstruction. For the possessor of tactile sensation, your name 'having a body,' even if it is established on atoms in the view of the Vaisheshikas, for the Vaisheshikas, it can still serve as a valid reason to establish that atoms are impermanent; even if it is not established, it can still become the third way of establishing it. If the sign itself is mistaken on the subject, etc., even if the name of the sign is not mistaken, it should be known that this is a flawed proof. If the sign is correct, then the reality related to the dharma, i.e., the reality of the object related to the sign, must be established. For example, 'The speckled cow is the subject, has horns, because it moves,' and 'The baby elephant is the subject, is an elephant, because it has a hand,' just like establishing a proof like this. The name of this elephant, i.e., the name 'having a hand,' is considered not mistaken because it is famous for the elephant being spoken of, because this name has been conventionally agreed upon before and is well known to people. If that is the case, then the object to be expressed is the hand and...
