Because one is attached to oneself, even when seeing one's own faults and shortcomings; because one is not attached to others, even when seeing their merits; because one abandons the notion of 'I' regarding the past and the parts of the body, one will no longer have attachment. Furthermore, precisely because of this, regarding the mind that clings to power and other things, you cannot simply assume that seeing their merits is the real reason for your attachment, because attachment to them is not always consistent. Similarly, you cannot simply assume that seeing the faults of power and other things will prevent you from being attached to them, because it is not only seeing faults that makes you not attached. Moreover, for someone who desires liberation, it is not just seeing the faults of 'I' but also clinging to merits that do not belong to 'I' that leads to attachment to 'I'. Therefore, how can practicing contemplating 'I' as suffering, etc., harm attachment to 'I'? It does not harm, because these practices do not harm attachment to 'I', as they are the cause of attachment. The Samkhya school argues: Attachment does not arise from seeing merits but from considering the object of attachment and the consciousness of 'I' as one; realizing their difference leads to liberation. In response, ordinary individuals who seek liberation should recognize that their own power and other things are different from the eternal 'I', because they pursue higher goals that transcend their current power and other things, and their minds understand that their own power and other things are subject to birth and death. Furthermore, attachment to power and other things does not arise from considering power and other things as one with consciousness, because even without this notion of oneness, you still generate attachment. So, what is the cause of attachment to 'I'? Attachment to 'I' is the cause of attachment, because within the objects you focus on, the notion of 'this is mine' and other attachments naturally arise. So, how can one get rid of attachment by practicing contemplating suffering? For someone who is tormented by suffering and feels aversion, this aversion is not a sign of liberation, because it is accompanied by hatred. As the Sthavira school says: 'All unpleasant feelings are accompanied by hatred.' In this situation, there is still attachment, because people seek to escape suffering and pursue happiness. If one were to assume that freedom is attained simply because hatred always arises, then liberation would be too easy.

If it is said thus: Then, such hatred associated with discomfort, its nature is not constantly arising, because the intensity of suffering lasts only for a while. It is the cause of suffering. Therefore, such a person, his nature is not without attachment, because when he tries to prevent his own intense suffering, he will again rely on clinging to his own nature. What is without attachment? The nature of an Arhat (Sanskrit: Arhat, meaning: worthy one) is said to be without attachment, because he maintains equanimity towards all things by abandoning the notion of acceptance and rejection. This equanimity is like, when a person smears one hand with sandalwood and cuts off the other hand with an axe, he does not develop attachment or anger, but maintains the same attitude. Then, is the practice of suffering not the cause of detachment? How did the Bhagavan (Sanskrit: Bhagavan, meaning: blessed one) teach the practice of suffering? The nature of the Bhagavan is not to teach the practice of suffering by focusing solely on suffering itself, but because he knows that all contaminated aggregates are suffering, he teaches the practice of the suffering of aggregates. The suffering we practice, its nature is emptiness, because it arises from causes and conditions. The practice of the suffering of aggregates, its nature is not truly liberated from samsara, but because it is the basis for the arising of the wisdom of directly seeing selflessness. Directly seeing emptiness, that is, the wisdom of realizing emptiness, its nature is liberated from samsara, because it is the direct antidote to attachment. The practice of contaminated, impermanent, suffering, etc., its nature is necessary, because it is the meaning of directly seeing emptiness, that is, it has a result. Universally, therefore, the Bhagavan, considering this point, taught that from knowing contaminated impermanence to knowing suffering, to realizing the selflessness of aggregates.' If someone wants liberation, then he is still a person in samsara, because he has not been liberated from afflictions and the karma produced by afflictions, because he relies on all actions of acceptance and rejection associated with desire. This is because he clings to self, rather than being without attachment. All actions that rely on desire are called samsarins. If there is an agent, there is no enjoyer because there is no self. Third, in the state of liberation, there is no concept of 'mine'. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
