Question: If it is the owner of 'mine' (Tibetan: བདག་གི་བ་, Sanskrit: mama, Romanized Sanskrit: mama, Literal meaning: mine), then, concerning phenomena, how do you think that 'arising' etc. which are the basis of 'I', will destroy 'mine'? Answer: It is not appropriate to think so, because 'I' is the source of desire, because of attachment to 'I'. Question: At the time of liberation, phenomena, how do you think one would crave for the 'I' which possesses qualities? Answer: One would not crave, because there is no 'I' at that time. Because the basis of experiencing happiness etc., conceptual terms, and all qualities such as wisdom, have disappeared. Question: Do you accept this universal rule? Answer: I accept it. Because the self-nature of attachment, 'I', is not like that without experience etc. Question: Then, you who desire liberation, phenomena, will develop attachment to 'I'. Answer: Yes, because you are attached to the gross 'I'. Question: Is this universal rule valid? Answer: It is valid. Because attachment to 'I' in all circumstances firmly attaches to 'I'. Question: If so, then the state of attachment to 'mine' will continue to exist. Answer: Yes, because attachment to 'I' is the seed of attachment to 'mine'. Question: If one abandons attachment to 'mine' and strives to regard 'mine' as suffering? Answer: Phenomena, even if you strive to practice, because you see the merits of 'mine', you will still develop attachment to 'mine', because you are still attached to 'I'. The universal rule is that attachment to 'I' hinders you from abandoning attachment to 'mine'. Question: If one abandons attachment because one sees the faults of 'mine'? Answer: Phenomena, that is not the case. Because 'mine' is regarded as a means to achieve the happiness of 'I', so the faults of the happiness of 'mine' are obscured. Question: If one abandons attachment even to 'I'? Answer: Then, at the time of liberation, phenomena, now there is no attachment to 'mine'. Question: If one thinks so, then the practice of regarding 'mine' as suffering becomes meaningless, because one abandons 'mine' just as one abandons 'I'. Moreover, if attachment to this is abandoned, this will not be abandoned, like 'I'. Therefore, it is meaningless to regard suffering as practice. According to such a translation, phenomena, even if attachment to 'mine' is abandoned, it is not guaranteed that 'mine' will be abandoned, because even if attachment to 'I' is abandoned, 'I' will not be abandoned. Words like 'like' and 'as' indicate that this example is not definite. Question: If one thinks so, then the practice of regarding 'mine' as suffering in order to abandon 'mine' becomes meaningless. Answer: For this reason, those yogis who regard 'mine' as suffering, phenomena, even if they regard 'mine' as suffering, they only clearly recognize that 'mine' is suffering, and they do not become detached from it. Because in the state of not having abandoned attachment, even if they clearly recognize this, they still have not abandoned attachment to 'mine'. No fault. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

If one abandons attachment upon seeing faults, then currently, because one sees faults in some things, one abandons attachment to them. If you say: His, the one desiring liberation, because in the moment of seeing faults in 'I', attachment will turn away from his mind, but even so, it will not become a permanent abandonment of attachment, because he is still attached to 'I'. For example, a person with desire, in the moment of seeing faults in his own wife, may not be attached to her, but because of attachment to other women, he becomes attached to her again. Regarding this, it can also be said that sometimes one may not be attached to 'I', but attachment to 'I' may still arise, because one is attached to considering 'I' as something to be taken and 'mine' as something to be abandoned. This is a universal rule: whatever attachment arises from 'I', when another thing generates attachment to 'mine', it becomes the seed of all attachments to 'mine'. If 'I' is without fault, then attachment to 'I' should not be considered a fault to be abandoned, because 'I' is the ultimate goal to be attained, and it is the desire for 'I'. Power and so on should also not be considered faults to be abandoned, because they are the means to achieve ultimate happiness. If both are accepted, then for those seeking liberation and those who have attained liberation, 'I' and power and so on should not be considered to be abandoned, because they are without fault. If this view is accepted, then what is attachment abandoned to? In reality, it cannot be abandoned, because 'I', attachment to 'I', and 'mine' are not what you need to abandon. This is a universal rule: the objects of action are only these three, and there is nothing beyond these three. If you say that even if 'I' is without fault, attachment to 'I' is faulty because it causes suffering, so it should be abandoned. Then, 'I' is also equally faulty, because it is also the source of suffering. If you think so, even if 'I' is the source of suffering, one should not abandon attachment to 'I'. Therefore, for those who want liberation, just because it is the source of suffering does not mean that it must be abandoned and relinquished. Furthermore, attachment to power and other 'mine' arises only from seeing the qualities of 'I', and it disappears or is destroyed only by seeing the faults of 'I'. If you accept this view, then the object of cognition (what is known), attachment to power and so on, is not generated only by seeing their qualities, because even children and livestock who do not have the ability to distinguish between good and bad have attachment to their own power and so on. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
