If the later sutra (referring to the *Laṅkāvatāra Sūtra*) does not explain the nature of ignorance but merely demonstrates ignorance through showing other aspects of attachment to self, then, the dharma of this later sutra actually only directly shows the view of the perishable aggregate (Sāṃkhya-dṛṣṭi, Tib. འཇིག་ལྟ་), and it is illogical that it does not directly show ignorance. Because there is no such correct argument. If the view of the perishable aggregate is ignorance, then that which has the same characteristics as views is ignorance. If you say so, it contradicts what is said in the sutra, 'similar correspondence.' Regarding this seemingly contradictory situation with the scriptures, we will explain it as not contradictory: the view of the perishable aggregate and ignorance are not similar correspondences of different entities, but merely because they are the same in some aspect or have the same attributes, so it is said that way. The wisdom that directly sees emptiness is completely contrary to all faults such as attachment and aversion, because it is directly contrary to the view of self. This is pervasive, because the nature of attachment and aversion arises from the view of self. If you say that beings, etc., will not exhaust beings because it is the dharma nature of beings, just as the shape of sugar, etc., will not exhaust sugar, then, the dharma of attachment, etc., because it is the dharma nature of a permanent self, will not be exhausted, which is illogical. Because it has not been established that this is the dharma nature of a permanent self, because there is no permanent self. Because in the continuum connected with the opposing side of oneself, one can also see your regression. If you say that just as molten copper becomes hard when it leaves the fire, when the antidote is lost, attachment, etc., will arise, then, an Arhat who has eliminated all faults, just as molten copper becomes hard again, will not have attachment, etc., arise again in his continuum after the antidote is lost, because his realization of no-self in his continuum will not be separated. Because his continuum has become the nature of directly realizing no-self. Therefore, dharma, the loss of the antidote does not necessarily lead to the re-emergence of faults, just as the ashes burned by the fire will not turn back into wood even if the fire is extinguished. Refuting the view that there is liberation while still having self-grasping The second part has five aspects: If there is self-grasping, all faults will arise, therefore one will cycle in samsara; if there is self-grasping, one will not abandon attachment to self; if so, because there is nothing to be eaten, there is no nature of the eater; therefore, it is advised to abandon the root of suffering—the view of the perishable aggregate; refuting the view that there is liberation while still having self-grasping merely because it is difficult to control. If there is self-grasping, all faults will arise, therefore one will cycle in samsara The first part: Some proponents say that practicing self can attain liberation, what is the use of practicing no-self? For those proponents, etc., who desire liberation --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Any being, having the property of dharma: Therefore, the notion of clinging to 'I' will arise, because they see matter as 'I' and hold onto the clinging of 'I'. If admitted, then the desire for happiness will arise, because they cling to 'I'. The faults of clinging to 'mine' will be obscured and instead be regarded as virtues, because they desire 'my' happiness. If admitted, then they will accept the means of achieving 'my' happiness, because they see the virtues of 'mine' and are completely desirous of it. If admitted, then this will contradict liberation. Therefore, they will wander in samsara, because they are manifestly attached to 'I'. As long as there is this attachment, there will be this wandering. Therefore, they will perceive things that are not 'I' as 'other', because they have a manifest clinging to 'I' in their minds. If admitted, then clinging and hatred towards 'I' and 'other' will arise, because they are beings clinging to 'I' and 'other'. If admitted, then all faults, such as miserliness, will arise in their minds, because their minds are closely connected with these attachments and hatreds. If there is attachment to 'I', then it is not abandoning attachment to 'mine'. The second part includes a brief statement, a detailed explanation, and a conclusion. First: If because of not clinging to 'mine', we will no longer wander in samsara, then, the beings who desire liberation in the Shravaka vehicle and other schools, having the property of dharma: they are not without clinging to 'mine', because they cling to 'I'. Having the property of dharma, they also do not have the cause of not clinging to 'I', because they cling to 'I' as being without fault and possessing virtues. Second part: If 'I' is without fault, but clinging to 'I' is faulty, so the previous assertion is not universally applicable. If asked what will result from this, the answer is: because it is seen as a fault, it will be abandoned. If answered in this way, then you who desire liberation, having the property of dharma: you are not able to abandon the clinging to 'I', because you cling to the truth of 'I', the object of that clinging, without refuting that clinging. The clinging to 'I' in the minds of the Shravakas, having the property of dharma: you are not able to abandon it by means of methods like removing external thorns, because abandoning it is achieved by seeing the virtues of 'I', that is, by abandoning the clinging to 'I' as possessing virtues. The reason is established, because the mind that clings to 'I' as possessing virtues is related as cause and effect. The hatred that arises from aversion to clinging to 'I', having the property of dharma: you are not able to abandon it without refuting the notion of seeing clinging to 'I' as faulty, because abandoning it is achieved by abandoning the notion of seeing clinging to 'I' as faulty, that is, the mind that clings to the faults of 'I' is related as cause and effect. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
