If the form aggregates of other sentient beings exist, but the eye faculty is incomplete, then it can be inferred that they are 'unborn things'. Therefore, the pervasion between cause and effect must be established. I (the author) assert that 'I' is not the material cause of the aggregates, because you (referring to permanent phenomena) do not have the power to generate aggregates through reversal, because you are permanent. The word 'etc.' includes all permanent phenomena. **II. The Origin of Suffering (Samudaya)** The origin of suffering is divided into three aspects: revealing suffering and its causes, thereby eliminating disputes; negating that permanent phenomena are causes, thereby revealing that craving is the cause; and eliminating disputes about karma, etc., being the origin of suffering. **III. Revealing Suffering and Its Causes, Thereby Eliminating Disputes** First, this suffering, as the subject to be proven, must be established as having a cause, because it is sometimes present and sometimes absent. If there is no cause, then it will either always exist or always not exist, because it will not sometimes arise. This is the pervasion, because if there is no cause, then sometimes arising does not depend on other conditions. Some who claim that nature is the cause say: 'Just as thorns, karma, etc., and the shapes of lotus stems, filaments, lotus hearts, etc., and some things have no cause, so too will these sufferings be without cause.' Generally, if the former exists as a helping condition, then the latter will arise; or, if the former changes, the latter will also change accordingly, therefore, the former is said by the Buddha to be the cause of the latter.' By establishing this pervasion, the sharpness of thorns, etc., as the subject to be proven, has a cause, because their existence or non-existence depends on whether the seed of the thorn exists. If someone says: 'Then, tactile sensation should also become the cause of eye consciousness.' Then, the cause of form—tactile sensation or the four great elements, as the subject to be proven, is the cause of eye consciousness, because they are the cause of form. **IV. Negating That Permanent Phenomena Are Causes, Thereby Revealing That Craving Is the Cause** Secondly, suffering, as the subject to be proven, cannot be produced by Ishvara (自在天) or permanent phenomena, etc., because valid cognition has negated that permanent phenomena are causes, and permanent phenomena do not have the ability to produce results. Therefore, suffering has a cause, but the cause is not a permanent phenomenon. If impermanent phenomena are carefully analyzed, there is no other possibility of existence other than craving as the root. Therefore, craving, i.e., desire, especially the desire for ordinary womb-born beings, as the subject to be proven, is the cause of intense suffering in samsara. Why? Because ordinary sentient beings are not guided by Ishvara or permanent phenomena, etc.

Therefore, you understand their desire to obtain the differences of places, etc. If only craving is the origin, then the sutra says: 'From that arises all suffering, what is the noble truth?' Until 'desire craving, existence craving, and non-existence craving.' If these three are all said to be the origin, is this contradictory? The craving to go to wombs and other birthplaces is existence craving or love of existence, because it seeks future life. Ordinary beings born from wombs always have the thought of obtaining happiness and abandoning suffering first, and then they accept wombs, etc., through attachment. Therefore, there is always desire craving and non-existence craving first, because there is always the idea of accepting and rejecting happiness and suffering first. This is universal, because ordinary people who perceive non-happiness as happiness, etc., will enter all birthplaces, etc., because of their attachment to self, because inverted thoughts will make them enter wombs, etc. Therefore, craving is the basis of existence, because it is the cause of samsara. This can be proven by scripture and reasoning: because one has not seen birth in samsara without detachment from attachment, craving is the cause of samsara, as said by the teacher Vasubandhu and others. As it is said in the Commentary on the Dependent Arising Sutra: 'Without craving, there is no existence.' The debater says: 'Because one has not seen birth without detachment from attachment, attachment is the cause of birth. Similarly, because one has not seen attachment without a body, the body will also produce craving.' This is unreasonable, because the body, which is an aggregation of unreasonable attention, is considered the cause of its result—attachment, because the Buddha has acknowledged it as its co-emergent condition. The body clearly shows that it itself is the proximate cause of attachment, etc., because it is a conditioned phenomenon. If one thinks that the body is also the cause of attachment in this way, because one has not seen birth without detachment from attachment, then the outsider himself will harm his own claim, because the knowable is not without a previous life, because the body and attachment will become causes for each other. If attachment is not the cause of the body, because it arises simultaneously with your birth—the body, because it is only seen at the time of the body's birth, then the body is not the cause of attachment, because it arises simultaneously with attachment. This is unreasonable.
