འགོག་ལམ་མོ། །(‘gog lam mo) The Path of Cessation. ༈ སྡུག་བདེན། (sdug bden) The Truth of Suffering. The first part has three points: revealing the suffering of those in samsara, refuting the view of no samsara, and explaining the aspects of suffering. ༈ འཁོར་བ་ཅན་སྡུག་བསྔལ་དུ་བསྟན་པ། (‘khor ba can sdug bsngal du bstan pa) Revealing the Suffering of Those in Samsara: First, what is suffering? The aggregates of appropriation, the five skandhas, their nature is suffering, because they have the continuous cycle of birth and death. ༈ འཁོར་བ་མེད་པར་འདོད་པ་དགག་པ། (‘khor ba med par ‘dod pa dgag pa) Refuting the View of No Samsara: The second part has three points: establishing the existence of samsara by the sign of habituation, establishing it by the near-taking of consciousness, and refuting the view of no samsara as too extreme. ༈ གོམས་པའི་རྟགས་ཀྱིས་འཁོར་བ་ཡོད་པར་སྒྲུབ་པ། (goms pa’i rtags kyis ‘khor ba yod par sgrub pa) Establishing the Existence of Samsara by the Sign of Habituation: First, there are two points: establishing the proposition and the argument. First, the Tirthikas say that there is no samsara, because there is no coming from the previous life to this life, and no going from this life to the next life, so the proposition is not established. To this, knowable phenomena, the clarity of attachment and so on at birth, is because of prior habituation, because in this life attachment and so on are habituated, previously unclear, and later become clear. Second, if it is not clear by habituation, then the clarity of attachment and so on is without cause, or has another cause? If it is the former, then the clarity of attachment and so on is arbitrary, because it is not without cause, but occasionally arises. This is pervasive, because arising contradicts being without cause. If the latter is asserted, then the three poisons of attachment, aversion, and ignorance increase from the three elements of bile, phlegm, and wind. Then, the nature of the three poisons of attachment, aversion, and ignorance is the property of the three elements of bile, phlegm, and wind, because it is not a direct result. Because there is confusion about these three elements. Because the nature of bile is mixed in phlegm. If it is said that those with much phlegm also have wisdom, so there is no fault. Then, those with phlegm and wisdom, why do they not see the properties of bile, such as foul odor, etc.? Because they have much bile. This is pervasive. There is no contradiction, because the three poisons of attachment, etc., are the direct result of the three elements of phlegm, etc. If it is said that knowable phenomena, attachment, etc., are the property of all three elements of phlegm, etc., because if so, then all three are equal, and all desires are the same, which is a fault. If it is said that although the causes are the same, just as bodies, etc., are not the same, so there is no fault here. If it is said that even the bodies of sentient beings have various karmas as causes, then the bodies of sentient beings should be the same size, because the causes are the same, so there is the same argument there. Attachment, etc., are not the direct result of the three elements of phlegm, etc., because the differences are revealed after these three faults. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Now, because you have no obvious distinction, it is universal. If that is its direct result, then when the cause increases, the result should not decrease, just as when bile increases, heat increases. If the increase of bile causes physical pain, then seeing anger increase. If the sign is not established, then merely seeing it does not prove that the sign is established, therefore it is not universal. If it is universal, then anger, as the subject, should be the direct result of those three. Because it is seen that all three arise from physical pain. If it is said that desire, etc., are the result of all diseases, so there is no error, then desire, etc., as the subject, should not arise from the existence of those three. If so, then all people who have those three equally will have the same desire, etc., which is flawed. If those three are equal, then desire will increase; if they are unequal, then anger will increase, because there is no distinction, so the sign is not established. Desire and anger, etc., change from the equality and inequality of those three. Those three are not directly produced merely from equality and inequality. Because they are produced from the equality and inequality of those three, arising from the pleasure and pain that exist in tangible objects. If it is said that the suffering produced by the inequality of those three hinders the production of desire, then please say what causes desire for women? If it is said that the equality of those three increases semen, thereby producing desire, then What is known, as the subject, desire for women is not the direct result of the equality of those three. Because it is also seen that those who have inequality of those three have desire for women, and others have equality of those three, but also do not have desire for women. As the subject, desire for women is not the direct result of increased semen. Because those who have desire, when semen is exhausted, even if bleeding, it is seen that they are even more attached to women. A person who is particularly attached to a beautiful woman, as the subject, will not become very attached to that only woman. Because there is no reason to say that semen will increase to that only woman. If it is said that the beauty of a woman is also a factor of desire, then, What is known, as the subject, the increase of semen and the beauty of a woman are not the direct cause of producing desire for women. Because it is not certain that all who possess these will have desire for women. Because some even hate her. Desire for women, as the subject, is not the direct result of the beauty of a woman. Because even without beauty, it happens. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
