Furthermore, (the consciousness at the time of death) is the proximate cause for the arising of the five faculties (panchendriya, five sensory abilities) of the next life, because it mainly contributes to their substantial nature. Therefore, such a dying consciousness is not a direct cause of the next body, because it is cast far away and cannot be seen. If someone says, 'It (the dying consciousness) is not the proximate cause of the body that produces the senses of the next life, because it cannot be seen,' then, to prevent the consciousness of the next life from being a direct cause of the parts of the body of the next life, and to prevent it from being the proximate cause of the senses of the next life, using 'casting far away' etc. as reasons is not a valid argument. Because using the inability to determine that it (the dying consciousness) is the cause of the senses of the next life to prove that it is not the cause is not established. As has already been explained in the first chapter. The tangible senses and consciousness, as well as the five faculties and consciousness at the time of death, cannot be used to prove that they are not the proximate cause and direct cause of the senses of the next life, because you (your argument) are incomplete. After demonstrating that the previous senses do not hinder the production of the later senses, now the argument that supports this is shown: the dying senses that are attached to the body are able to produce similar senses in the next life, because they are senses that are attached to the body. For example, the five faculties of this life, we see that they have the ability to help the later senses of the same kind. If this example is not established, Then, when there is life, it is also established that later senses arise from previous senses, because we see that previous senses and land become turbid. If someone says, 'When there is life, senses arise from the body, not from previous senses of the same kind,' then, the previous and later senses of this life will arise simultaneously, because they arise from the eternal body. Just like before, they will become docile. If the current senses arise only from consciousness, Then, therefore, knowable things, the senses of the body of the next life will also arise only from consciousness. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Refutation of endless increase. Second, regarding the debate, there are two points: Debate: First, the Vaiśeṣika (རྒྱལ་དཔོག་པ།, meaning 'Follower of Special Characteristics') says: 'Love, etc., may have some differences through habituation, but they do not become infinite by exceeding their inherent limit, like jumping and the temperature of water.' Answer: Second, in four points: There is no reason for jumping, etc., to exceed the limit; there is a reason for love, etc., to become infinite; jumping is not of the same kind but depends on the body; again, refuting both the example and the meaning. There is no reason for jumping, etc., to exceed the limit: First, we show that there is no fault because we have stated a special reason. Ordinary jumping, its characteristic is: there is no reason for it not to increase infinitely, because even if cultivated through habit, it still depends on the repeated effort of the body. The heating of water is also the same; it does not arise naturally from the previous cause, because your basis is unstable and will be interrupted. The previous cause, its characteristic is: similar dharma. Therefore, it cannot help you to accomplish the subsequent efforts infinitely. The heating of water, its characteristic is: it will not exist without you, because the water that is its basis is not permanent water. These two, their characteristic is: even if they increase slightly, they will not increase infinitely, because they do not arise naturally from the previous self-nature. There is a reason for love, etc., to become infinite: Second, love, etc., its characteristic is: you will make the subsequent effort more excellent than the previous effort, because even if you cultivate it through habit, it does not depend on the repeated effort of the body, but is a quality of the mind. Its characteristic is: if it is habituated, it will arise naturally, because the excellent qualities that arise from habituation in the mind-stream are continuous. For example, if there is no obstacle, like fire from wood, and refining mercury with mercury antidote, or refining gold with gold alloy, etc., making gold more excellent. Because of this reason, its characteristic is: you will make the subsequent habitual effort more excellent than the previous effort, because the similar self-nature, those previous ones, are continuous qualities that arise as the essence of the mind. Love, etc., its characteristic is: if the favorable conditions (conditions that help to increase) are fully habituated, and there are no unfavorable conditions (conditions that hinder the increase), then where will it exist, so that there is no limit?'
