These are instructions given with compassion to those who do not even slightly rely on a guru. Not only should one revile the guru oneself, but one should also avoid being with those who revile the guru. The *Net of Illusion* says: 'Those who revile the guru, should not be seen even in dreams. Whoever reviles the guru, is seized by obstacles and false guides. The deeds of the wicked and violent, the wise should always avoid.' Similarly, the Four Great Kings and others will not protect him and will even kill him. The *Ornament of the Vajra Heart* says: 'The wicked, violent, and greatly foolish, even if they flee to the four directions, the wise will not protect them, but with spears and other weapons, they will kill those who do evil.' Third, the benefits of respecting a guru who possesses the qualities described above are: 'Respect and make offerings to the guru, and give in accordance with his wishes. By this, harm such as epidemics, will be pacified and will not occur.' This means that one should offer whatever the vajra master, the guru from whom one has received the kindness of the Vajrayana, desires, in accordance with his wishes. By doing so, the harm such as epidemics mentioned above will be pacified and will not occur again. The phrase 'will be pacified' also indicates a way to restore previous disrespect towards the guru. The proper extent of relying on a guru, with justification: The fourth general topic is the proper extent of relying on a guru, with justification, which is divided into three parts: the actual extent of relying on a guru with justification; the categories of actions with their benefits; and summarizing these points, showing how to transform the perception of the guru as being no different from the deity through reliance. The first part has two points: the actual extent and the justification. The first is: 'One's own samaya guru, even children and wives who are difficult to give away, and even one's own life should be served, what need is there to mention movable possessions?' This means that one's own samaya guru, the vajra master from whom one has properly received empowerment, even children and wives who are difficult to give away and cherish, and even one's own life, should be served and pleased by offering them. Then, what need is there to mention pleasing the guru with external movable possessions such as horses and elephants, that is, impermanent worldly objects? --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Thus, in the 'Compendium of Union' it is said: 'One's own wife and daughter, male and female servants, and sisters, after prostrating, should be offered to the guru. With all my possessions, the wise should offer to the guru. From this day forward, I am your servant, I offer myself to you.' Thus, one should report.' Second, the rationale: Then, why is it necessary to please the guru by offering even one's own life? 'Because hundreds of thousands of millions of eons, are also difficult to find, the Buddha himself also to the diligent, in this very life gives.' As it is said. For what reason does the 'Compendium of Union' say: 'The rituals of the eighty-four thousand collections of Dharma, if one does not understand the nature of the body, all of these are said to be fruitless.' Aryadeva said: 'Even in hundreds of thousands of millions of eons, having reached the other shore of hearing, if turned away from the blessings of the guru, he will not realize the truth.' As it is said, like those who have entered other paths, hundreds of thousands of millions of eons are difficult to find, that is, the state of Vajradhara (Holder of the Vajra) of Buddha's union, which is difficult to obtain, is given in this very life, the essence of the unsurpassed Vajrayana path. To whom is it given? To those superior beings who possess diligence and austerity. For those who do not have diligence, it is not their own fault, the word 'not' here not only indicates the supreme, but also indicates that common accomplishments will also be given in this life. Second, the categories of actions, possessing the merit of benefiting others, are divided into two: the actual content of the categories and the merit. First: 'Always guard one's own vows, always worship the Tathagatas, always offer to the guru as well, this is no different from all the Buddhas.' 'With endless desires, whatever is slightly pleasing, whatever is extremely special, that and that offer to the guru.' Meaning, always, that is, at all times and in all ways, with mindfulness and awareness, for the collection of vows and precepts that one has obtained, to guard and uphold them according to the Dharma, is the basis or root of all paths. As the 'Treasury of Knowledge' says: 'Having morality, learning, and thought, one should diligently apply oneself to meditation.' Thus, by possessing vows and precepts, one should always offer to the mandala of the Tathagatas, such as glorious Vajrasattva, with countless different outer and inner offerings. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
