From the Vajra Tent Tantra on the characteristics of a teacher: 'Then, the characteristics of the Vajra Master will be correctly explained. The near-accomplishment mantra of that one, the practitioner will surely accomplish. He should possess peaceful and profound Dharma, be skilled in all reasoning, know fire offerings, mandalas, and mantras, and be skilled in the pacification of the deity and the Torma ritual.' 1-514 'He is thoroughly familiar with the ten kinds of knowledge, upholds the conduct of the Hearers, reveres the practice of mantras in order, rejoices upon seeing those with form, is skilled in drawing mandalas and reciting mantras, and destroys the root downfalls. Through mantras and methods that protect the body, he brings happiness to the worlds.' Thus, one should rely on a lama. As the Hevajra Root Tantra says: 'The yogi of the desired deity, has gone beyond the mantras.' Similarly, the Samputa Tantra, the Vajra Dakini, the Vajrasana Four Seats, the Net of Illusions, the Kalachakra Tantra, and the Guhyasamaja Tantra, etc., extensively explain the characteristics of the lama and the disciple, so one should consult those and understand the qualities. Those who wish to rely on a teacher should examine whether they possess these qualities, and if they do not, they should strive diligently to cultivate them. Those who wish to rely on a teacher should also clearly understand these characteristics and strive to find such a virtuous spiritual friend. Even if they do not find one, they should single-mindedly accumulate merit and make aspirations, praying that they will be taken care of by such a qualified teacher. They should also understand the faults and qualities of the disciple. 1-515 'Strive to abandon faults and strive to possess those qualities. Here it is said: Like a bird trapped in a cage, unable to fly freely to other places, nor able to give what is desired in that place. I have seen many who are seized by bad friends. Most fools, like a dog of the village, follow after those who are rich in food, clothing, and wealth. Others, like seeking a flower in the sky, desire only those of high birth from the heart. Some, like a blind person entering a dark house, worship the soles of the feet of the ignorant with their heads. Alas! Nowadays, in this land of snow mountains, those who are seized by virtuous spiritual friends are as rare as a morning star. Therefore, those who have wisdom and seek liberation should, with three examinations and four reliances, rely on this supreme guide who brings all happiness in this life and the next, and adopt and abandon this conduct accordingly.'

Furthermore, one should enter with reverence.’ This is also an instruction. Second, the faults of disrespecting a qualified lama are twofold: the direct faults, and showing non-disrespect in terms of having faults. First, the direct faults are divided into a general statement and a detailed explanation. The first is: ‘If, having thought ill of such a protector, one disrespects him as a disciple, it is like disrespecting all the Buddhas, therefore he will always suffer.’ This means that if one disrespects such a protector—the lama with the qualities to be relied upon as previously described—for example, thinking, ‘This person has broken vows, lacks diligence, and is ignorant, while I am the most excellent,’ and thinking this in one’s mind, and then verbally slandering him, then he will always, that is, for a long time, experience suffering feelings. This is because he is not mistaken in another place, nor is it because his mind does not abide in its own nature, but because he deliberately, with a tormenting mind, disrespects and slanders. Who does this? It is his disciple, that is, the Vajrayana disciple who has mainly received empowerment, the disciple who has received the kindness. The reason for suffering is that because the object of disrespect is said to be the embodiment of all the Buddhas, therefore disrespecting him is like disrespecting all the Buddhas. The reason why offering to the Vajra Master is said to be offering to all the Buddhas is also this. Second, the detailed explanation is divided into: generally showing visible and invisible faults, and explaining the invisible faults in detail. The first is divided into two parts: the faults of mere disrespect, and the faults of extremely disturbing the guru’s mind. The first is: ‘Then, if one slanders the guru, what faults will there be?’ If one thinks this, then, ‘If one slanders the guru, one will be struck by plagues and harmful diseases, as well as demons, epidemics, and poisons, and that greatly ignorant one will die. Kings, fire, poisonous snakes, water, dakinis, thieves, demons, and evil guides will kill him, and then this sentient being will go to hell.’ This means that the disciple who slanders the Vajra Master will be struck by plagues and so on, and then quickly die. Plague refers to an unbearable contagious disease other than an epidemic. Harm refers to harm caused by fierce creatures other than underground beings. Disease refers to lung disease, blood disease, vomiting, and leprosy, etc., which are not plagues or epidemics. Demons refer to gods, nagas, and garudas, etc. Epidemic refers to daytime... --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
