《TSR41 Collection of Teachings by Trachen Lotsawa Gyatso - A Commentary on the Fifty Verses on the Guru: Opening the Door to the Treasure of Accomplishments》 1-498 《A Commentary on the Fifty Verses on the Guru: Opening the Door to the Treasure of Accomplishments》 Oṃ Svasti Siddham Om, may there be well-being, may there be accomplishment). This is a commentary on the fifty verses on the means of relying on a virtuous spiritual friend, entitled 'Opening the Door to the Treasure of Accomplishments.' I prostrate to the Guru and glorious Vajrasattva! Through your kindness, coemergent bliss increases, And you easily bestow the good fortune to practice. I reverently bow to the glorious Guru who seizes the fears of samsara and nirvana, may you reside in the lotus of my heart! In the noble land of India, the diadem of countless Paṇḍitas—the jewel—has touched the feet of Bhāviveka many times. His fame flutters like a banner, just as the noble mother prophesied. He composed this extraordinary treatise, the 'Fifty Verses,' which is the supreme root of beings' practice. I am fortunate to explain it clearly through the kindness of the holy ones, may the discerning listen with joy! Here, for those disciples seeking liberation, the only door through which all accomplishments arise is to rely on a virtuous spiritual friend in the proper way. To explain how to rely on such a spiritual friend, we will discuss the treatise composed by the great teacher Bhāviveka, also known as the Third God, a fully accomplished great Paṇḍita, entitled 'Fifty Verses on the Guru,' which has three parts: 1-499 The meaning of the introduction, the meaning of the main text, and the meaning of the conclusion. First, the meaning of the introduction, which has two parts: the homage and the pledge to explain. First, the homage: To attain the state of glorious Vajrasattva, I prostrate to the lotus feet of the Guru. Here, 'prostration' is taken as the basis for the explanation. To whom is the prostration made? To the Guru. As it says in the Samputa Tantra: 'The Guru is the one who holds the mantra, tantra, and instructions.' In Sanskrit, the word 'Guru' means 'heavy' or 'pressing,' indicating that the qualities are weighty and capable of overpowering other beings. Or, 'Gu' means 'secret' and 'Ru' means 'samadhi,' thus revealing the secret nature. Or, 'Guṇa' means 'qualities' and 'Ruci' means 'collection,' thus possessing a collection of qualities. Or, from the sound of 'Gu' is derived 'Uttara,' meaning 'high,' thus the highest or supreme. The lowest part of the Guru's body is the feet, and if even the lotus seat beneath the Guru's feet is prostrated to, what need is there to mention anything else? This expresses extreme reverence. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

It should be practiced accordingly. The method is to act with reverence through the three doors of body, speech, and mind, as stated in the scriptures. What is the purpose? It is to possess splendor, as expressed by terms like 'Glorious'. As stated in the Root Tantra of Hevajra: 'Śrī (藏文:དཔལ་,梵文天城体:श्री,梵文罗马拟音:śrī,汉语字面意思:吉祥) is non-dual wisdom.' Therefore, it is to possess the splendor of the two accumulations or non-dual wisdom. What is that? It is Vajrasattva, Vajra is emptiness, and Sattva is great compassion without objectification. The union of these two is a samadhi like the wisdom vajra, and the state attained is such. The root cause for attaining this state is the instructions of the holy guru, which in turn depends on the grace of the holy guru. Who will explain it? It is Bhāvi (god) who appeared earlier and I who follow later. Secondly, the commitment to explain: 'ཏེ་' is a connecting word in the sentence. What will be done after connecting? It is to rely on the guru, as stated in the Immaculate Tantra: 'Listen with reverence to this concise explanation.' First, it is taught to listen. How should one listen? Not just listening casually, but listening with great reverence and single-mindedly. What should one listen to? It is the method of relying on the guru. As stated in 'relying on the guru', I know because of the kindness of relying on the guru. If someone asks, 'Isn't this explanation your own creation?' It is not. It is explained as stated in many immaculate tantras such as the Net of Illusion of Manifestation, the Vajra Pinnacle, the Black Enemy of the Destroyer of Yama, the Supreme First, the Guhyasamaja, and the Vajra Tent. If someone thinks, 'It is enough to understand from those tantras, isn't it redundant for you to write this?' Although they exist in those tantras, some are too extensive, some are in the wrong order, and some are scattered in various places. Therefore, here, the scattered contents are collected and explained concisely in fifty verses, so it is not redundant.' This avoids the fault of repetition. Generally speaking, the reasons for revering and serving the guru. The second part is the content of the text, divided into eight aspects: Generally speaking, the reasons for revering and serving the guru; Specifically, how to serve before receiving teachings, and the examination of the object and subject of service, including the reasons; the standard for relying on the guru, including the reasons; examining what should be done and what should not be done at the appropriate time, thereby taking and abandoning; and preventing the evil deeds of others. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
