Pacifying the Earth: Explaining the circumstances under which such actions are without fault. 1-502 Here is a summary of these points. First, the general justification for venerating the guru is shown: 'The empowerment is supreme, attaining Vajra, the guru is thus the Tathagata. Because he dwells in the ten directions of the world, I prostrate and pay homage in the three times.' This means that the empowerment is the complete empowerment of the Vajra Master. 'Supreme' refers to how it arises from the immaculate, precious Tantra, without being adulterated by self-creation. The object attained from these, the Vajra Master, is venerated by the Buddhas who dwell in the realms of the ten directions, such as the east, and who have gone to and comprehended Suchness as it is, with manifest homage and prostrations during the three divisions of a single day: morning, noon, and afternoon. What need is there to mention ordinary disciples? As it says in the seventeenth chapter of the Root Tantra of the Glorious Guhyasamaja: 'Son of lineage, in brief, all the Buddhas and Bodhisattvas who abide and nurture in the realms of the ten directions come in the three times, and all the Tathagatas worship the guru, properly worshiping and going to that Buddha-field, and uttering the letters of Vajra speech.' 1-503 Furthermore, the Vajra Tent says: 'The guru who is the teacher is honored by the Buddhas. He is our father and mother.' The Glorious Essential Practice says: 'He is the guru, not another guru. Countless Buddhas also always worship him. The Buddhas and Bodhisattvas abiding in the directions always bow down to him.' Therefore, in the commentary of the venerable Rinpoche, the intentions of the tantras are explained separately and are very extensive. Here, the meaning is summarized. Specifically, how to show respect before receiving teachings. Second, showing how to show respect before receiving teachings is divided into general and specific. First, the general explanation: 'With utmost purity, in the three times, with a mandala of flowers, with palms together, venerate the guru, and prostrate at his feet with your head.' This means that for a guru who can show you the essential instructions, whether you have no prior Dharma connection or have only taken common refuge. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Furthermore, for the sake of all sentient beings, one should be motivated by the supreme intention of attaining Buddhahood, and with sincere and unfeigned faith, bow one's head to the feet of the humble, prostrating three times in the morning, noon, and evening. Is that all that is sufficient? One should also make offerings with abundant offerings such as material possessions, and arrange the mandala with flower bouquets, etc., and supplicate with folded hands. Secondly, regarding special circumstances: Should one physically prostrate at all times and in all situations? Not necessarily, there are times when it is not required. As it says in the scripture: 'For householders or novices, to avoid worldly scorn, before the Dharma, etc., those who uphold vows should pay homage with their minds.' This means that for householders who are suitable as teachers, or younger novices who are younger than oneself, i.e., śrāmaṇeras, etc., oneself as a monastic who upholds vows, i.e., those who uphold the vows of śrāmaṇeras and bhikṣus, etc., in order to propagate the Dharma among the inferior beings such as śrāvakas, when supplicating, if foolish worldly people scornfully say: 'These monastics are truly lowly, they are actually prostrating to householders.' The śrāvakas will also say: 'Mahāyāna practitioners prostrate to the bodies of householders, this is not the teaching of the Buddha, the Buddha said that there are only two objects of prostration, namely the Buddha and elderly bhikṣus.' Therefore, they will slander and create many negative karmas as a result. To avoid this, one should place the Dharma scriptures and other representations including Buddha images in front, and actually prostrate to these Dharma objects, while paying homage to the teacher with one's mind. In some cases, if the person to be prostrated to is sitting on a low seat, one should actually prostrate. Then, are all other services to the teacher unnecessary? The scripture says: 'Laying out the seat and rising, and all services such as tasks, those who uphold vows should do, prostration and non-Dharma should be abandoned.' That is, prostration with five limbs, and actions that are not in accordance with the Dharma, such as washing feet, cleaning excrement, etc., should be abandoned and not done. Apart from these, all other services should be done by the disciple who upholds vows. So, what are these services? That is, laying out the seat for the teacher, rising when the teacher rises, and handling tasks, etc. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
