In a path filled with dangers, such as the fears brought by thick fog, rivers, canyons, and thieves, upon hearing the instruction 'Go ahead,' one should proceed forward. As stated in the *Vajra Heart Ornament Sutra*: 'At night, crossing rivers, being in canyons, if it is to fulfill the teachings, going forward is without fault.' Fourth, in front of the teacher: 'The wise should not twist their body, should not lean on pillars, etc., should not count finger joints.' This means that in front of the teacher, a wise student should not twist their body, should not lean their back against pillars or walls, etc., and should not fidget with and count their finger joints. Second, the manner of serving with body, speech, and mind, divided into three parts. First, how to act with the body: 'Washing feet, washing the body, applying, massaging, etc., prostration should precede, and likewise at the end, as is comfortable.' This means that before washing the teacher's feet, washing the entire body with water, applying bean flour, etc., to the body, massaging with oil, etc., one should first prostrate. Similarly, after completing these tasks, one should also prostrate before engaging in one's own activities as is comfortable. Second, serving with speech: 'When mentioning their name, add an honorific after the name, and for the sake of respecting others, speak excellent words.' This means that if it is necessary to mention the teacher's name, one should add an honorific such as 'Venerable' after the name. Moreover, in order to highly respect others, one should also speak special words of praise, such as 'Supreme, Omniscient, Vajradhara,' etc. For example, saying 'Venerable Vajradhara So-and-so.' Third, pleasing the teacher from the mind by abandoning arrogance, divided into three parts. First, pleasing the teacher by abandoning arrogance when listening to instructions: 'To the teacher, one should say: Please instruct, I will follow your teachings. With palms joined, without distraction, listen to the teacher's instructions. Yawning, spitting, etc., cover the mouth with the hand. After the task is finished, repeat with gentle words.' --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

He said: 'First, I should request the Lama to instruct me on what I should do.' When the Lama says, 'Do this and that,' one should say with great enthusiasm, 'I will definitely do as you instruct.' Thus, the Lama's instructions should be listened to attentively with palms joined and without distraction. At that time or on other occasions, in order to avoid unseemly behavior such as laughing or spitting in the presence of the Lama, one should cover one's mouth with one's hand and conceal it. After completing the task that has been instructed, one should not act as if one is finished, but should repeat in very gentle words, 'I have done it,' so that he may know or understand. As it is said in the 'Ornament of Vajra Essence': 'Therefore, at the feet of the Lama, guard shame like a bride. Coughing, laughing, spitting, etc., cover your mouth with your hand. You should speak very gently.' And 'Whatever work you do, or wanting to treat equally, etc., in order to grasp (the point), do not unfold your palms, do not stand up from your seat, do not turn your back on (the Lama).' Second, please the Lama by abandoning pride in listening to the Dharma. The sutra says: 'Sit humbly in front, and arrange your clothes and so on, and with knees planted and palms joined, make three requests with the desire to listen, etc.' This means that in front of the Lama, abandon pride and sit humbly, and arrange your clothes such as the upper garment, and be mindful. Kneel on the ground, join your palms, and make three requests. Because of the desire to listen to the Dharma, etc. Listening to the Dharma is for the sake of determining the characteristics of the Dharma, and wanting to receive empowerment and vows, etc., is also included. Third, in short, abandon pride in all offerings. The sutra says: 'In all acts of offering, do not have pride in your mind. With shame, fear, and restraint, abide like a new bride. In front of the teacher, abandon all acts of coquetry, etc. Furthermore, examine and abandon similar actions yourself.' This means that, taking the above as an example, in all the bodily and verbal conduct of offering to the Lama, one must never have pride in one's mind, thinking, 'I have done these things, so I am kind to this Lama.' Because cultivating pride towards a sacred object is said to be a very serious sin. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
