Therefore, in the presence of the guru, one should avoid unseemly behavior with a sense of shame, not regarding the guru as a thorn in one's side, but with fear and respect, strictly restraining the actions of one's body, speech, and mind, and abiding with conduct that is in accordance with propriety, like a new bride. Likewise, all inappropriate actions, such as coquetry and arrogance, should be avoided in the presence of the guru who teaches you the Dharma. Furthermore, any doubts about whether such actions are permissible should be carefully weighed with your own wisdom, and all inappropriate actions should be abandoned and discarded. Third, pleasing the guru by acting in accordance with his instructions has four aspects: First, when doing things for the benefit of others, request the guru's permission: 'Consecration, mandala, fire puja, gathering disciples, and teaching, if the guru resides in that place, should not be done without permission.' This means that for consecrating the body, speech, and mind supports of the Sugata, constructing sand mandalas and giving empowerments to others, or performing fire pujas for pacification, in short, for gathering disciples and teaching the Dharma, if one's guru resides in that place, one should be in accordance with the guru's mind and request permission. One should do it if the guru permits, but not without permission. If the guru does not reside in that place, then it is not necessary to request permission. Second, offering the gains from it: 'Whatever is gained from eye-opening and other activities, all should be offered to the guru. The guru should take what is needed, and the rest should be used as one pleases.' This means that eye-opening is another term for consecration, and whatever wealth is gained from empowerments and other activities should be offered to the guru. The guru should take what is needed from the offerings made by the disciple, and the remainder should be enjoyed by the disciple as he pleases. Third, do not accept the service and reverence of others in the presence of the guru: 'The guru's disciple is not one's own disciple, nor should a disciple, in the presence of the guru, accept service, rising, prostrations, etc.' This means that the guru's disciple should not be made one's own disciple, and even if he is one's own disciple, he should not teach the Dharma in the presence of the guru. The reason why the guru's disciple should not be made one's own disciple is that, he will be very respectful to oneself, but to the guru... --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

If the offering is small, it should not be done. This indicates that if one's own students offer clothes to themselves in front of the Lama (Guru), or stand up, prostrate, etc., they should be stopped from doing so. Fourth, specifically, how to behave when offering items: 'Whatever is offered to the teacher, and whatever is given by the Lama, the wise should respectfully accept with both hands.' This means that whatever one offers to the teacher, and whatever the Lama gives to oneself, the wise disciple should respectfully offer and accept with both hands. As it is said in the 'Union Tantra': 'Whatever is given, should be accepted after prostrating.' This also indicates that one should prostrate to what is given. Preventing Others from Engaging in Negative Conduct The sixth general point is to prevent others from engaging in negative conduct: 'When mindfulness becomes dull, through diligence in one's own conduct, when a Dharma brother's conduct transgresses, one should joyfully prevent each other.' This means that one should always remember one's Lama, thinking of them on the crown of the head during the day and in the heart at night, like a mother with an only child, without ever forgetting them. Regarding the way to serve the Lama, even in the smallest details, one should immediately put them into practice with intense diligence, as if one's head were on fire. Furthermore, those who are Vajra brothers, whether they know or do not know the conduct of serving their Lama, if they transgress the precepts due to carelessness or lack of faith, should compassionately prevent them, saying 'Do not do this,' so that they become Dharma friends to each other. One should not be angry, but should joyfully guide them with reason and scripture, leading them onto the right path. Explaining Situations Where There is No Fault in Such Actions The seventh general point is to explain situations where there is no fault in such actions: 'Due to illness, not following the Lama's actions with reverence, and even if the prohibited actions are done, virtuous beings will not incur sin.' This means that if one cannot accomplish the aforementioned ways of serving the Lama, is it permissible? It is not permissible to act with negative motivations, such as contempt, insults, or disturbing the Lama's mind. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
