And, identifying the objects to be refuted by the two selflessnesses, identifying the nature of the two selflessnesses, explaining the categories of names of the two selflessnesses, identifying the nature of the basis of emptiness of the two selflessnesses, the correct reasoning for discerning the ultimate truth, and the examination of appearances, there are seven aspects. First, the two selflessnesses of person and phenomena are the same in nature but different in aspect. The reason for this is that all phenomena of appearance and sound are both two selflessnesses. There is not the slightest difference in terms of nature. For example, a distinguishing characteristic of a phenomenon like a vase cannot be identified, but temporarily, under the power of mere imputation, if it is identified as a distinguishing characteristic, then something like a vase never has "I" and "mine," which is the selflessness of person. Because the vase is not truly established in the slightest, it is the selflessness of phenomena. There is no difference in nature between the non-establishment of "I" and "mine" and the non-establishment of truth. Therefore, all phenomena are both the selflessness of person and the selflessness of phenomena. However, from the aspect of reversing the object to be refuted, the perverted "I" and "mine," it is the selflessness of person. From the aspect of reversing the object to be refuted, the truly established perversion, it is the selflessness of phenomena. Because the aspect is distinguished by the way the object to be refuted is reversed, it is a difference. Second, since all phenomena are both two selflessnesses, and since there is no difference in nature, what is the necessity of distinguishing between the two selflessnesses? The reason for this is to guide those of the Lesser Vehicle, the Hearers and Solitary Realizers, which is the selflessness of person. And to guide those of the Great Vehicle, the Bodhisattvas, the Buddha taught these two, the selflessness of phenomena. Among them, for those of the Lesser Vehicle, it is necessary to show the certainty of the selflessness of person, because without showing it, there is no liberation from samsara. Moreover, because they do not possess the capacity to show the selflessness of phenomena beyond that, there is no need to show it to them, only the selflessness of person is shown. But for those of the Great Vehicle, in order to attain omniscience, the selflessness of phenomena is shown. Third, the objects to be refuted by these two selflessnesses do not exist in the actual knowable, because they are permanent and single.

Therefore, it is impossible for there to be a self of a person with autonomy, and likewise, in any phenomena of appearance and sound, it is impossible for there to be a phenomenon that is established by its own nature or established as true. However, the deluded mind with an object clinging to this and that is the object of negation of the two selflessnesses. Because it is a reversed concept that clings to what does not exist as existing, it is to be averted. Therefore, since the object of negation of the object does not actually exist, there is nothing to be abandoned, and for the object of negation of the object, that is, abandoning such a reversed concept, it is said to be abandoning the self. If the object of negation is established in real existence, then no matter how much effort is made, it cannot be abandoned. Therefore, no one can negate what exists in reality, and no one can establish what does not exist in reality. Fourth, the nature of phenomena, that is, suchness, has never been tainted or absent by the self of the phenomena of conventional appearance and sound, which is the characteristic of the selflessness of phenomena. Furthermore, other than the ultimate realm, all conventional phenomena do not establish their own essence from the beginning, which is only a category of the selflessness of phenomena. Since it appears in the discriminating consciousness with an object and is spoken of in sound concepts, it is called appearance and sound. For any conventional phenomena, whether manifest or hidden, the entity of I or self can never exist, so the name of the selflessness of the person is applied. Therefore, since these two selflessnesses pervade all phenomena, it is the common characteristic of all phenomena. Fifth, regarding the names of this selflessness of phenomena, there are such as absence of inherent existence, absence of arising, absence of cessation, primordially peaceful, and naturally completely beyond sorrow, etc. To show the meaning of the infinite names, the venerable Maitreya in the Ornament of the Sutras said that the meaning of absence of inherent existence is that any phenomenon whatsoever will not be established as its own inherent existence in the future, and past phenomena do not exist as their own entity, and present phenomena do not abide in their own essence, and they do not exist as the mind grasps them, therefore they are considered to be without inherent existence. Here too, the way in which absence of inherent existence is applied in three ways should be understood as explained in the fifth chapter above. Absence of inherent existence and absence of arising, etc.
