The various names established by conceptualization have no connection with the things themselves, yet people cling to the idea that names and things are related. This conceptualization of the general phenomenon of sound is merely a fabrication of the mind. The reason for this is, for example, that which possesses a dewlap and a fleshy pendulous flap is the "meaning," and calling it "cow" is the "name." Since the name cannot directly touch the thing itself, there is no connection between the two. If the two were indeed related, then before knowing the name "cow," since the concept of the name does not arise, the dewlap and fleshy pendulous flap should also not exist. However, the thing existed before knowing to name it "cow." Furthermore, for the same thing, due to different regions, there are various different names such as "cow," "go," and "gawi." If there are many names, then the dewlap and fleshy pendulous flap should also become many, because the name and the thing are the same. Moreover, among these names, only the name "cow" applies, and there is no reason why other names do not apply. If it applies, then all apply; if it does not apply, then none apply. Furthermore, there are many things to which only one name applies. For example, the letter "ཀ་(ka,梵文ka,汉语:迦)" can refer to both Brahma and the teachings of the Buddha. Since the two have the same name, then these things should also be the same, because the two names are the same. Furthermore, when there was no concept of a name before, one could not see the forms of things such as color, but only the coarse parts. Because the indivisible particles that appear as external objects do not exist, and the momentary indivisible consciousness also does not exist, therefore all things, whatever they may be, are only things with parts, and therefore are merely coarse. Mistaking many coarse things for one whole is completely untrue. For example, in a certain place, there is only one person named "Devadatta." Here, the many aggregates of Devadatta's body and mind are clung to as one whole. If one clings to it in this way, and it is not a thing with parts, if it is established as one whole, then if one part of that person's limbs, such as a hand, moves, then the entire body should move, because it is truly one whole.

for. Such movement is because it contradicts direct perception. Furthermore, if the mouth performs the function of speaking, then it would follow that other organs such as the eyes would also perform the function of speaking. Therefore, it is clearly seen that one function cannot be performed by multiple organs. The eyes, ears, and other parts are formed separately. Moreover, if one part of the body, such as the head, is covered by clothing, it would follow that the entire body is covered by clothing. Or, if any part of the body is not covered, it would follow that the entire body is seen as not covered. Furthermore, if one part of the body is changed by color, it would follow that all of it is changed. Or, if one part of the body is not changed, it would follow that all of it is not changed. For that reason, a coarse object composed of many diverse things does not truly exist as one. To prove the absence of permanent truth: Master Shantideva said in the Bodhisattvacharyavatara: "The continuous flow of many moments and the collection of many things are false, just like a rosary and an army, and so on." For example, a rosary is not each individual bead itself, nor is there a separate entity called a rosary apart from each individual bead. Rather, it is when many beads are strung together that it is called a rosary. Similarly, the belief that something exists for a year is also like that. One year has three hundred and sixty days, twenty-one thousand six hundred hours, and those are composed of countless moments. It is when a continuous stream of moments arises without ceasing that it is called years, months, and so on. These are not years and months from each individual moment, nor are years and months established separately from each individual moment. Therefore, it is merely a deceptive appearance of conceptual thought. Similarly, when many people gather together, it is called an army. Moreover, upon internal analysis, there are various things such as bodies and armor, and these are also composed of many particles. Each of these is not an army, nor is there an army separate from these. Therefore, it is merely a designation by the mind. Fifth, the past and the future are not merely designations by the mind, but the past thing
