Regarding the general refutation of the view of the perishable aggregate, and the specific refutation of the twenty views of the perishable aggregate, among the two. The first has twelve types of intellectual analysis, the first of which is to refute by examining whether the self and the aggregates are one or different: As stated by the venerable Nāgārjuna in the Root Wisdom of the Middle Way: If the five aggregates are the self of the person, just as the five aggregates are subject to arising and ceasing, so too, the self should become subject to arising and ceasing, becoming of an impermanent nature. If the self of the person is a substance that has changed from the aggregates, then it will not have any of the characteristics of the aggregates. That is also unacceptable, when the three feelings of pleasure, pain, and equanimity arise, the thought, "I am happy! I am suffering!" is also unreasonable, because I am not feeling pleasure and pain, because the self and feeling are two entities with different characteristics. By this, it can be inferred that it is the same for the other aggregates. Second, refuting by examining the past and future: For example, when the person Devadatta dies from the god realm and is reborn as a human, are the self that became a god and the self that became a human the same or different? If the self that became a god is the same as the self that became a human, then the self should become permanent, however, the two cannot be the same. The reason for that is, if the self that became a human is the self that became a god, then on the basis of the human body, one should also be able to freely control the place, body, enjoyment, lifespan, etc. of the gods, but that is not the case. If the self that became a human is different from the self that became a god, then the self should become impermanent, because the self at the time of the god has ceased, and the self that became a human has arisen. Third, refuting by examining the taker and the taken: The taker is the self of the person, What is to be taken is the five aggregates, for example, from a collection of the five aggregates of the taker of the gods, then when reborn as a human, it is like taking the five aggregates of the person who is the object to be taken. Therefore, how are the taker, the self, and the taken, the aggregates, one or different? If it is said to be "one," then the aggregates that are to be taken are not the taker, not the self of the person, because the self of the person is permanent, single, and independent.

Yes, because the aggregates of grasping arise initially and perish ultimately, possessing the nature of impermanence. Therefore, just as the self is permanent, the five aggregates of grasping should also be permanent, or, just as the five aggregates of grasping are impermanent, other, and dependent on others, so too should the grasper, the self, be. Furthermore, the self is not a different entity from the aggregates of grasping, and if the two were unrelated and different, then when seeing a form, the thought "I see the form" would also be unreasonable, because the form is seen by the eye consciousness, and the eye consciousness and the self are unrelated and different. The fourth point, refuting by examining the collection: As stated in the "Sutra of the Meeting of the Holy Father and Son" within the Ratnakuta Sutra, the collection of body and mind is designated as "person," and the collection of body and mind, the flesh, skin, bones, etc. of the body are the earth element, the blood, bile, sweat, etc. are the water element, the body's warmth is the fire element, the movement of breath, etc. is the wind element, the body's cavities, etc. are the space element, and the four aggregates of name are the consciousness element. The collection of the six elements is considered a person, but if there were a real person, then if each of the earth element, etc. were a person, there would be the fault of being six persons, etc. If, among the six elements, something like the earth element were a person, and the others were not, then among those six, one would be a person, and the others would not be. There is no reason to accept or reject. Moreover, a person is not the earth element, nor water, nor fire, nor the wind element, nor the space element, nor consciousness. If it is not any of these six elements, then apart from that, a real person cannot be found anywhere. The fifth point, refuting by examining characteristics: As stated by Aryadeva in the Four Hundred Verses, if the self of a person is not female, not male, and not neither male nor female, then clinging to a self is unwise.
